Only if you're being pedantic about it. It's about as much use as your "LOL" at the end of the question. What's it for........

You might check out your local psychologist. You can’t self-diagnose when it comes to anxiety and depression. Not only might some treatment or counseling help with the finger issue, but it might help with everyday life as well. Lots of things can trigger or contribute to depression. This of course is also a health risk due to vulnerability to infection, so you might even approach it from that standpoint. Your description sounds a lot like people I’ve talked to about self injury that is often associated with depression. It hurts, they want to stop, sometimes don’t know why they do it, and it is a destructive habit. Of course a necessary ingredient to any sort of problem solving is personal resolve. You have to decide that you want to stop, and keep that attitude as you take steps toward meeting that goal. Whether that means you simply make a personal pact in writing, or you seek out some assistance, in the end, you are the one who must make the progress. Some people find that having an "accountability partner" helps, someone that the person will have to answer to should they fall back into the behavior. This of course requires another highly trusted friend who can see through evasiveness, which can be a rare find. There are a lot of self-injury resources out there, but most are directed at breaking the tie between injury and emotion. You didn’t really say much about this (whether it is a release of sorts or something comparable to nail biting, just a seemingly unrelated habit) so I don’t know how much of it would apply. Recognizing that the behavior is a problem is a huge step forward. I really encourage you to find a reputable psychologist and explore if that’s a route you want to take. It’s not for everyone, but keep an open mind. It's not a failure of any sorts of one's resolve or whatnot to get some assistance... on the contrary the decision takes a lot of strength and understanding. Put simply, you are dealing with a bad habit, regardless of its origin, and the solution is persistence while addressing the underlying causes. Best wishes :)

no, actually it is not. cannibalism is when a human eats the actual flesh of another human. your nails are not flesh so it is not considered cannibalism. if you were trying to be funny, i do not find the humor in this.
