Sometimes when i drift off to sleep it is almost like i am stuck between half wakeness & half sleep; i am definateley not fully asleep as i am not dreaming as such & i am simewhat aware that i am awake but my mind will be dissoriented as my thinking will be distorted & get stuck on something over & over again as i toss & turn restlessly. If i completely snap myself out of it i can rarely recall what i was thinking but i do feel anxious & uncomfortable over that strange episode & restless sleep. Does anyone know what this is? I find i get this usually when i have studied a lot during the day. I am 24. Thanks

What you are describing sounds to me like the "wired" feeling from having too much caffeine before bedtime.

Check your caffeine consumption. If you're drinking coffee , tea, or colas in the evening (while studying) then you may be too wired to sleep when you want to go to bed.

Stop with caffeinated beverages about 6 hours before bedtime. People's metabolism changes several times during their lifetimes, and an amount of caffeine you used to tolerate well might now be too much.

If you are taking stimulants like no-doze, or God Forbid--meth, you need to stop immediately.

If you feel that your sleep problems have anything to do with Depression, then you can visit your school's clinic and ask for an evaluation. They'll be able to advise ( and might be able to help with your sleep problem either way...)

It sounds like you are suffering from stress or you can't unwind at night. Therefore you are driffting in and out of the stages of sleep. Try having a set routine to getr you to relax. For example read a book and have a bath. Also try and do at least 15 mins of exercise a day. This will help you to sleep better.

It happens to all of us at some time or the other. We are not in deep sleep when that happens and I usually wake up feeling tired. Yes, it is quite normal to happen when we are studying.

Could be lucid dreaming like the other poster stated or it could be sleep paralysis. Google them both and see which if any symptoms fit the best.
