The best way is probably to go on a course to use them. I did a full time course in computer studies at college which included spreadsheets among a lot if other things. Learn direct do an ECDL (European computer driving license) course that includes a modules in spreadsheets to get you started . There are literally hundreds of things you can do with a spreadsheet varying from the simple adding up,counting a number of values, averages, look up tables, linking spreadsheets together, graphs and charts.

Either that or get a good teaching book. Spreadsheets for dummies is quite good.
