HAHAHA...You think feeding a budgie is expensive?!?

I feed Zupreem Pellet. And cooked food. And, once a week, whether I feel like it or not, I pull out all my baking supplies and I make muffins for my birds.

Feeding's not the expensive part of bird ownership. It's the toys.

The answer is no. You may NOT feed your bird grass to "save" money. If you must feed it seed, feed it seed, but even that's not good for him. Get a good budgie pellet. It will cost you 10-12 bucks US for a bag that should last you several months for one budgie.

If you can't afford about £1 for a kilo of budgie seed that will last an average budgie a couple of weeks then you shouldn't have a budgie in the first place. Budgies and caged birds are cheap and low maintenence already without trying to save any more money! Do little Joey a favour and buy him the genuine thing you meanie! :-)

Take a spoonful of the budgie seed you buy and sprinkle it on some ground you prepare. Water it. Look after it... eventually it will grow and you can have home grown nourishing budgie seed for your bird without a huge expense. Even if you use some sprigs of your own seed bearing plants and some store bought.. it will make the cost lower for you. Or you could put your budgie on a diet. Each day measure out the food and take away one millet seed or whatever.... it will save you 365 seeds over the course of a year... hehheh.

Sorry the second answer was my attempt at humour. But the first one is serious. I know lots of people who do supplement the food for their birds this way.

Cheers

No.

They will eat grass seed but alone it isn't a complete diet. They need budgie food too.

If you can't afford to feed your pet why did you get it?

I agree with the others, if you can't afford a bag of budgie food, then you have no business having a bird. Honestly, what kind of person are you to feed a helpless animal "grass seed", as their diet? Thats abuse!

if you are trying to save money then just give the budgie away to a relative or a friend because giving it grass and seeds will save you only a bit of money whilst givinig it away will save you even more money

no you cannot becuase it is not its staple diet. Budgies eat seeds most of the time and veggies are only PART of their diet (say 25%).

To suggest that budgies can be fed grass all the time is like saying that humans can eat meat all the time...ie. it is only part of their whole diet and other components are equally or more important.

NO you can't.
Your budgie needs a complete diet or it will get very sick and starve to death.
It should also have a supply of fresh fruit and vegetables for optimum health.
If you can't afford a pet, give it away to a better home.
