I bought a 6 month old golden retreiver last sunday and he is generally very obedient and will come called. However in the park he totally ignores me and runs at other dogs and barks. I shout his name over and over and shout "come here" but he won't come back so I end up running after him. I've tried shouting nicely and tried shouting firmly but to no avail. I have been praising him when he comes back and give him a treat when he comes to me and sits in front of me, but in an open space with other dogs he does as he pleases! Am I expecting too much of him at this age? I really need to know how to stop this. Can someone please help?!

you need to leader train him

then progress on to long leads, or a peice of rope.

Build up the power of your recall back to you and the scale of the distraction, from one dog miles away, to several dogs nearby.

He will improve as he matures and as you undo some of his bad habit. Just hang in there.

It will take you a while and as its a new dog to you, as the dogs bond to you improves, so will they. Be the master

Firstly, you have had this dog for a very short time. I would advise that you keep the dog on his lead until you build up a good bond with him and he gets used to walking and being beside you! If you have a garden at home practice recall there or get a big loooooong lead to practice in the park. Until your dog has formed a good bond with you he will be more interested in running after other dogs.

It also sounds like you guys would benefit from going to some kind of socialisation class, ask your vet for details. Good luck :)

1st this dog hasn't been with you any length of time so you are not the pack leader. you need to go a dog training club and in the mean time keep your dog on the lead as some dogs will see the barking as a threat and could attack your dog and other dog owners will get upset with you if your dog makes a problem for them

You have had him less than a week and are letting him run loose?

He hasn't had time to bond to you yet, take him to an obedience it will help with learning and bonding and complete before letting him offleash again
