when my dog was a pup, she would bark. at first i would tap on the window, this would stop her. if she barked again, i would tap on the window again, then the next time she barked, i would spray her with water. it took a few times, but she soon realized that the tap on the window let her know that it would be water the next time and she wouldn't bark again. now that she is grown, only occasionally do i have to tap on the window. good luck.

If a dog recognizes you as being higher ranking then him in the pack hierarchy, he will listen to you. My dog barks when he hears doors into the house open, and occasionally when car doors outside close. I simply need to tell him no in a deep voice and he stops. If I'm laying on the couch and I don't feel like sharing it with a stinky dog, I give him a strong look as he tries to crawl up and he'll decide the floor's a better location. If I don't mind sharing, I'll invite him up. Have things done on your terms, not his.
Your major problem right now is that your dog doesn't think of you as outranking him. You need to change this by displaying dominance over him. You can do this through food (putting food down onto the floor, not letting him have any of it until you want him to), spots on the bed and couch (make him move for you, don't let him up if you don't want to), toys (give him toys at your own leisure), and walks (take him where you want to go, not the other way around). Obviously, you probably don't really care about that slimy dog toy or that corner of the couch, but to him possessions will display rank. You don't have to be mean about displaying dominance, just get it into his head that you control him and what he gets. If he comes to understand this, he'll listen to you when you tell him to stop barking.
I've noticed that simply using a word like no isn't enough. You need to change the tone of your voice to something a bit deeper and menacing. It probably comes off to a dog like a growl. It's something they can understand and respond to accordingly.
Having a clear level of dominance over your dog will really make your relationship with him much better. This all may seem a bit strict and harsh, but in wolf and dog packs, the higher ups don't take any flack from the lower ranking dogs if they want to stay in their higher position. Instinctively, dogs will fall into a pack hierarchy. It's up to you to decide who's higher ranking.

That may be the case. You may want to try the "shaker" method. Basically, it's just a can filled with pennies or washers (or anything that will make a loud noise when you shake the can). Go outside with him, and when he starts to bark, shake the can (this gets his attention on you) and then tell him "no"; if he stays quiet for a period of time, even if it's just for a minute, praise him. He'll eventually get the idea.

I have the perfect solution as we had to use this technique with our dog.
Saying "No" or using an electric collar, or even yanking his collar will never seem to work.
Get a small plastic bottle, like a diet coke bottle, the smaller ones not the huge 2ltr things..
And fill it full of dried peas, or small stones, just a 3rd of the way.
When he barks, throw the bottle down as hard as you can onto the floor as close as you can to him, but don't hit him with it! As it hits the floor, don't yell, because he will think you're excited and want to play and it will encourage him to bark louder.
Just drop the bottle as hard as you can next to him, it may frighten him, but he will soon stop with several tries with the bottle..
You can also buy ready made ones from large pet stores..
They're called "Shakers".

There is a collar you can get that gives the dog a small electric shock each time it barks. It is an aversion technique that is supposed to be very effective. You can also try just spraying the dog with your garden hose each time it barks. Just give them the message that the behavior is unacceptable.
