First, read up on how often an adult cat is supposed to eat. If the cat can not control his eating you have to do it for him.
Second, if you are feeding him human food, stop.
Third, encourage the cat to play. Get cat teasers (or make your own, find a thin stick, and attach something fluffy to a string on the end and go cat fishing.)
Again... if your cat is eating all the time, then limit the time he has access to food...

I used to have a fat cat. The best way to trim him up is to only fill bowl at certain times of the day, and stop feeding him people food. Sure, he will cry, tell you how hungry he is and be a real pain in th e butt for a little while. Cats are notorious liars. Within a few weeks, my fat cat had trimmed up a little, and eventually got used to the feeding routine.

Have you talked to the vet?
Or indoor cat is around 3 kilos in Summer, but during Winter she reaches over 6 kilos.
Our old out door cat weighed around 7 kilos in Summer, and over 13 kilos in Winter. When he was young, he hit 15 kilos, but it was all muscle and he had nearly 0 body fat. (The vet surmised he must have done bench presses when no one was looking.)
Cats will naturally put on weight during colder months, and it’s perfectly normal and healthy. The weight of your cat will depend on the size (height, and length) of the cat, and the muscle that your cat has.
If you’re worried about the cat’s weight, you should talk to the vet. If the vet advises that your cat needs to loose weight (which I doubt at under 7 kilos) s/he will be able to advise a healthy way to go about it.

Let's hope you are not free feeding your cat!
Get the "fatso" on a feeding schedule, give him/her food only during meal times. The best thing to feed obese/fatter cat is canned food 80% of canned food is water and water is great for kidneys (CRF - chronic Renal Failure is one of the biggest killer in cats). Dry food are too high in calories in general.
Slim fast or "welcome to the diabetes club" :(
Good luck!

change his diet. reduce the amount that your letting him eat. if there is food always down for him, change it. give him only 1 or 2 scoops of food a day(or the equivalent of 3 meals a day). take him outside more, let him get exercise. get him some cat toys and play with him.
