A footnote is usually employed to allow the reader of a paper, document or non-fiction work, to reference the material the author has relied upon for his work. In other words, if the author writes a statement regarding world population numbers, he might include the footnote: World Almanac, 2007 edition, pages 130 -135.

A footnote is a note at the bottom of the page citing the source of or additional information about information appearing on the page; sometimes this same data appears as endnotes: the notes for the entire article appearing at the end of that article.

A footnote, when used in a word program are often used in scholarly and formal writing as a way to provide additional information about a topic, without breaking up the flow of your text. Word allows you control over which type of note you use, and where that note is placed. You can enclude deatils such as page number, Topic type, Topic source etc. They are usually in a different font to that of the main type font in the document.

Only one sentence is used in a Footnote i.e., only one period or full stop is used at the end of any Footnote or Endnote citation. In a Bibliography, each citation consists of a minimum of three statements or sentences, hence each entry requires a minimum of three periods, e.g., a period after the author statement, a period after the title statement, and a period after the publication statement
