MEANING OF SATSANG-

Satsang (sanskrit sat = true, sanga = company) describes in indian philosophy 1) the company of the "highest truth"; 2) the company of a guru; 3) the company with an assembly of persons who listen to, talk about, and assimilate the truth. This practice also takes the form of listening to or reading scriptures, reflecting on, discussing and assimilating their meaning, meditating on the source of these words, and bringing their meaning into one’s daily life. Especially in the tradition of advaita-vedanta, satsang with an "enlightened" master is considered to be a prerequisite. Contemporary satsang-teachers in the west sometimes mix traditional eastern knowledge with methods of modern psychology.

During a satsang with a teacher students are likely to ask questions. Satsangs also may contain elements like lectures, meditations, or recitations. The purpose of a satsang is not primarily to be found in the transmission of a mental teaching, but in the experience of the presence of an "awakened" or "enlightened" being, in which students are meant to come to the same level of inner freedom through the effect of an energetic resonance-phenomenon.

Satsang in the West
The modern satsang masters have freed their teachings from the strict expectations of traditional advaita-teachers toward their followers. The masters assert that rituals or meditations are not necessary for inner freedom. Enlightenment is the ever-present truth that is being found beyond any conditions and spiritual states. As attachment to thoughts and to unresolved emotions are considered to be the hindrances to this cognition, many teachers emphasize the importance of accepting emotions unbiased as they are, with no attempt of changing or dissolving them. This, they say, will take the energy away from the stories of the mind, and thus from the stream of thoughts. Others recommend to permanently "return to the moment" in order to reach the same result. Because these practices are aimed at experiencing freedom in the presence, they are not regarded as "techniques" with an outcome to be found in the future. The worldwide fast-growing satsang movement has its roots in H. W. L. Poonja, a student of Ramana Maharshi.

All earlier contributors have given the meaning and explained it also. I would like to add the following:

Sat means truth. It should remain truth for ever that means irrespective of place and time it has to remain constant and unchanged. It is only GOD.

Sang means company or to remain. Here to remain means on all fronts. Except this no other thought should enter our minds.

Like minded people of this sort will sit together or meet and think or talk or pray only on God. Such meeting is called Satsang. The concentration gets disturbed if different minded fellow joins them. For a spiritual seeker, moving in Satsang is essential to get concentration. Once his mind is tamed God becomes his companion and he will have his real Satsang with him.

Adi Sankara narrated in his Bhajagovindam:

SATSANGATVE NISSANGATWAM

NISSANGATVE NIRMOHATVAM

NIRMOHATVE NIRMALA BHASITA TATWAM

Sat means ' Saint " or Mahapurush.

Sang means - meeting with devotion ( surrendering ).

If we happen to meet ( feel by heart ) a saint and devote to him with our heart, mind and soul, that will be called satsang.

Just going to some place for singing on every sunday is not satsang.

But until we get a true saint, chanting of bhajans on sundays is better than not chanting.

Sat means eternal and Sang means association.
So, Satsang means eternal association.

The saintly persons are called Sadhus (from the root meaning sat), and in their association the discussion about the eternal (Sanatna) Lord takes place and thus the association of saintly persons are Satsang.

Lord Kapila in His instructions to His mother Devahuti, informs that in the Satsanga the topics of the discussions of the pastimes of the Lord become potent and they penetrate the ear as nectar and reach the heart to cleanse all the misgivings and liberates one from the repeated cycle of birth and death.

Saints & religious leaders should not go to Himalayas or remote forests and claim these titles. They should live among the mass, show all the people how to live. They should practise what they preach. They should live like a normal Human, get married, should have children, but live as per the Holy Books and be an example to other followers. Today we have so many religious leaders or saints who get arrested after few years on rape charges, murder charges etc. How can such people be leaders? Many Saints travel in Helicopters & Mercedes after they claim to be a Saint. Before that they would have been the poorest of the poor. We have to be careful in selecting Saints and we should not blindly follow them without asking questions.
