A spreadsheet (Excel anyway) can only hold 64,000 rows

A spreadsheet (Excel again) can only hold 256 columns or fields

When a data set gets large, spreadsheets can become unwieldly, slow and hard to pinpoint data. Databases will operate well using SQL

A database will take up less memory space than a spreadsheet containing the same amount of data (because of formatting etc)

It is easier to pass data exerpts from one database to another rather than from one spreadsheet to another

Following features are either absent or only partly available in spreadsheets:
1. Database has a robust relational model that allows logical linkage and access of various tables as a single entity.
2. Database allows strict authentication and data validation
3. There are no limitations to number of fields while in spreadsheet columns are limited (so are rows).
4. Database is supported by Structured Query Language that is a stable and fast way of accessing records
5. Databases are designed to work on networks with multi-user scenario.
6. Database offers full-fledged programming support while in spreadsheet we have scripting support...

Hello,

(ANS)

No.1 A database can be designed to precisely fit the data if designed from the ground up.

No.2 A database can conatin a variety of data types not just text or numbers (video clips, images, graphics, voice & sound, DNA profiles, Iris data, etc)

No.3 Databases can be relational which means primary & secondary data can be analysed together to examine trends & patterns & flows.

No.4 Databases can be used over a network or over the internet itself were as thats technically harder to achieve for spreadsheets.

No.5 Database's can be as simple or complex as required, this gives tremendous flexibility of design & analysis.

**Both databases & spreadsheets have advantages & limitations. They are tools for a task or job, they both have overlapping functionality. Its hard to say one is better than another all you can say I suspect is which fits your task more completely.

**The basic design of databases & spreadsheets hasnt really changed that much since computing started.

Hope that helps?

Regards IR
