It is said that if a man says "I'm not ready to be in a relationship" it really means "I'm not interested in a relationship with you, but I'm letting you down easy."

I know a couple in their early 20s who have been together for over 3 years. She thinks he is the one, and he says she's "marriage material." However, he tells her that he's "not ready to get married yet or for a long time" whenever it comes up. She suspects that he's only staying in thier relationship because it is comfortable and convenient for him at this point in his life.

Guys - Does the same principle apply to marriage? If a guy says, "I'm not ready to get married" to a long-term girlfriend, does it really mean "I don't see myself marrying you"?

"I'm not ready" usually means he wants to have sex with other people.

Marriage and long term relationships are different.

When someone is not ready for marriage, that means that they are financialy, psychologically, emotionally etc not ready. Marriage is a responsibility to take care of wife/husband, children, finances...etc. Marriage requires strong commitment from both sides, but if one is still shakey about it, it better never happens.

In a relationship, the same applies, with the difference that you are not a fully pledged wife/husband, and you don't have the same responsibility like a wife/husband does.

If a guy says he isn't ready, he is definitely not ready. No that doesn't necessarily mean he never wants to marry, but it means that he simply isn't comfortable taking that step yet. After 3 years that isn't a good sign for sure, but doesn't mean he might not ever be ready. Early 20's is still very young for marriage.

"not ready" means talking about the 'now'. taking it too far would mean another. accept the former definition & enjoy the relationship as it is. .. ei the couple is only in their early 20s. this is not the time to worry too much whether he will marry her or not. sure you want security but pushing the other person to decide about it may only drive him away completely. For now, be there for each other & enjoy the moments. Not for long, he may enjoy it too much to realize that he can't imagine life without her anymore.....

It carries one of two meaning dependent on the guy and the reasons he gives. One he says this as a I just wanna get laid but don't expect me to be there when you wake up sort of thing, usually you can tell when all he talks about other than that is pretty much sexual based. The other is the guy who put it all out on the line for a beautiful woman and she crushed him and he genuinely feels he is not ready to try again but is still curious about you.

I'd think that he's not ready to commit, leaving his options open, messing around on the side, or having a bout of nervousness and self-doubt, which would be highly improbable.

We don't work the way you do. We don't play silly mind-games. If a guy says he's not ready, it means he's not ready. That's it.
