A friend of mine is recovering from a breakdown and her treatment is going very well. Unfortunately though I get the feeling that she feels she is the only person to have had such an experience, and therefore feels 'weird' and guilty. Can anyone recommend a good book for her that talks about someone else's sucessful battle with depression? It would be particularly useful if it were written from a young woman/mother's point for view.

You can get free booklets about depression (and a variety of mental health issues) from this website:
(it took me 1-2 weeks to get some)

Hope this helps!

Prozac Nation is pretty good. It's by Elizabeth Wurtzel. I have an extensive list of bipolar memoirs, but that's the only one on depression I can think of. The Noonday Demon is a really good book, but it gets a little scientific and boring at times. It reads less like a story. If you look online there's a good chance you will come up with a few others by women. It's become a fairly popular genre.

To Gertie who just says 'good'? I don't think the asker meant good as in a good read! I think she meant helpful, meaningful. A book that her friend can read and find some inspiration from. Try and be a bit more sensitive. Depression is hard and lonely. Just thinking someone else out there has felt the same, but has worked through it can make you feel a lot better and that life is worth living.

The Noonday Demon. Also, Dorothy Rowe's book about Overcoming Depression. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is about depression. Also, read any of Janet Frame's books. Otherwise there is the usual Self Help books at the main book stores. I have suffered from depression for years (endogenous) but your friend may not want to contact me. I am male, in my 50s. I bless you and your friend.

Don't know of any books but tell her from me she is far from alone or different and when she gets to the end of this she will be a lot stronger. I wish her well, hope you find her a good book and think she is blessed to have a friend like you.

Wally Lamb - She's come Undone is engrossing and about a young girl growing up with depression. Another book by the same author is 'I know this much is true' is another good one about identical twins, one with cronic mental probs and the other normal. Really worth a read.

Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger.

It isn't exactly a tale of "success" but it certainly does alot for making people with that kind of trouble feel less lonely about it.

The story fouses on a kid who sinks into a kind of depression, and eventually has to deal with it.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

But would be most happy to talk with her. one on one interaction is best. books will help off course. but she needs to know there are real people out there..reachable and willing to help her. I myself have been through some rough times. and come out of it stronger and wiser. feel free to email. there are some books I can recommend aswell. va_vap@yahoo.com
