in other words, do i have to pay a collection agency, or can i just pay the original amount to the original creditor?

You can "always" ask an original creditor if they will accept the payment.

Just be sure that if they agree to take the payment, they will also agree to recall the debt from the collection agency.

If you don't request that, they may take your payment and send it to the collection agency. Then the collection agency will just report the account as a paid negative.

Get everything in writing.

It is possible that the collection agency "bought" the debt and now is the legal owner of it.

O would suggest calling the creditor to see if this is the case. If so, then the collection agency must be paid.

Your original creditor may not even own the debt anymore.. They often sell off bad debts for pennies on a doller to so called "collection companies" So I'd be careful with that...
