I would like to go travelling / Back-Packing to South America, Japan as well as maybe Thailand.

What do I do?
Where and how do I start out?
What do I have to plan for etc?
How do I apply for a travelling visa?

Also, if anyone has any useful websites please let me know.

Cheers friends.

Hi,

good for you... here is my list of BackPacking websites. LP Thorntree is the best!

I use the Lonely Planet and the LP Thorntree the most - it's the worlds largest backpacking and independant travellers forum.

Also, these:

* Bootsnall.com
* RoughGuides website.
* backpackingeurope.com/
* travelindependent.info/
* GapYear.com
* the-backpacking-site.com/
* www.onebag.com/

You should read one of those books by Lonely Planet or Rough Guide - First Time Around The World, and buy the RouighGuide or Lonely Planet Centra America / South America On A Shoestring...

For Budget, assume between $1000 and $1500 a month, stayinmg in hostels so you can meet other travellers.

Use Hostelworld.Com to find your hostels...

Then you just need to chat to STATRavel.com for your RTW flight tickets ....

Remember, the more research you do the better!

For your backpack, make sure it's comfortable, and not too big, you have to carry it!

hope that helps

Philip

Great idea.... go travelling!
If you are thinking to leave soon i think its best to get down the doctors asap, for jabs can take some time to take effect.

As for your itenary, maybe it would be cheaper to get a round the world flight..... Rather than seperate flights and maybe you get more stops for the same money.

A travel guide will let you know exactly what you need for the individual countries, like whether you will need a visa, what jabs to get and general precautions..... along with the best bits of the countries to see.

Im sure you dont need a pre approved visa for any of the South American countries ( or central america. ) Dont be put off this from people telling you its so dangerous! S. am is great, i have been all over it and am always amazed by how friendly, welcoming and warm the people are. Not to mention the foods great and women are really cute! Thailand too doesnt require pre approved visa for entry..... If you think to add India to your list, then you do need to apply before leaving for a visa from the Indian embassy.

A rough budget for thailand and south america will be £30 per day.... sure you can do it cheaper, especially in Bolivia however if you like to go out and have a few beers, meet some friends and have a good time then probably gonna end up spending the £30. I have little idea of how much budget to allow for in Japan.... been told its a bit more expensive than the U.K. sure the guide will tell you plenty. Maybe you can find some work there teaching English..... heard of people picking up forged degrees from Thailand and then going onto Japan to teach..... Then you dont need to spend a fortune. Working in S. America...... the average wage is £50 per month, so work only if you have a passion for the job. Good idea also to learn some Spanish, try Michelle Thomas language cd's, they will get you by ( English isn't always spoken )

I am sure you will have a great trip.... Enjoy

Decide where you want to go. get the necessary maps, work out an itinerary. Work out your budget. Check travel books at libraries, ask at travel agencies. There are many books and lots of advise on back-packing. Find out the prices of back-packer lodges (termed back-packers), it comes very reasonably priced. Where you have them, stay with friends or relatives. In my country we have "youth hostels or YMCA" facilities. Apply for visa's at the various embassies in your home town of the countries you wish to visit. You may need to comply with medical precautions (such as the far east, Africa, etc) of which the embassies or your local Health Clinic will advise you, then - hop on the bus, train, ship or plane. Hiking is also an option, Bon voyage.

First watch Brokedown Palace and The Island. Buy a good steardy back pack with plenty of pockets, get some travelers checks and a little bit of cash, make sure your passport is current, see a local travel agent. When you're in another country don't sleep with strangers and let them talk you into transporting anything for them because you might get cockroaches in your ear.

Bangkok is just a fascinating, intoxicating and crazy place, filled with sights, smells, thrills, gracious people, contradictions, cultures, cars, noise and bedlam, know it with Hotelbye because Bangkok is full with great stuff. One of many things you will see in Bangkok is Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Wat Phra Kaew is the main Buddhist Temple in Thailand and is found in the ancient hub of Bangkok, within the grounds of the Grand Palace. The Temple of Emerald Buddha is beautifully furnished and has a good feeling of peace about this and makes Bangkok a city worth visiting.
