I live/work here. I love it. Yes, the corruption is real. The Thais know it and don't like to talk about it. The Taksin debacle is particularly unpleasant - and many are just bored or frustrated with what is going on. The process for getting contracts and, for many workers, a job on a contract, is terribly unfair and similar to some of the worst practices in countries that are truly third-world - like in Latin America.
I have never been stopped for a bribe or hassled in any way. You can still eat a meal in some places for less than 40 baht and enjoy some of the most pleasant people the world has to offer.

Corruption is real and endemic. NO real way to change it either without a major overhaul of everything.
For example, a typical police sargent earns less than US$ 200 per month and cannot possibly survive without corruption. Since most of them drive Mercedes the corruption must be quite lucrative.

VERY real. Near my apartment on Silom, the police block the road around 9:00 PM, and any taxi coming into this area without passengers is stopped and shaken down for a few hundred baht. It is so obvious, you'd have to be an idiot not to see it. These roadblocks exist on Surawong also and I am sure at other entertainment districts around the city.

it's real all right, just trying living here, you need to pay the man a few more hundred baht if you want anything done. Police love to stop farangs and ask for coffee money. I brought more coffee for police, i'm thinking of opening a starbucks. And does it surprise you thank no one can prove any corruption on Thaksin, because everyone else was involved.

This has been a way of life for hundreds of years and is not easy to change. Taksin tried in his early term in office to change this but had to let it ride as there was simply too much resistance to his plan. You just cannot change the leopard's spots.
