ok, so there are 17 coins, how can you split it in two and split one of your splits and split it into 2/3, then 1/3?

oh rite, lol, the first must be split in half, the second as 2/3 and the third 1/3

-sigh- man, were you guys wayyy off.

the answer is that since you must split it in half, you gotta have another coin. now, it's euqally 9 and 9, not 8, 2/3 of 9 is 6, and i believe you have 3 left, there's your 1/3, now all you have to do is return the coin from the 3 pile, and there's your 1/3.

You didn't say the first split was in half, so you take 9 coins, and leave 8.
Those 9 can then be split 2/3 into 6, and then 1/3 into 2.
It's only a guess.

*add - well I'm with the guy who said they're chocolate coins then.

Well, if you have 17 coins that add up to 1.50 dollars, distributed as such:

3 quarters
13 nickels
1 dime

The three quarters make 75 cents, as do the the thirteen nickels and one dime. So that's equal distribution there.

I could then take the 75 cent value and get 50 cents out of it (2/3) by using 8 of the thirteen nickels and the dime. That leaves me 13-8=5 nickels, which makes 25 cents, which is 1/3 of the original value.

-----------------------or----------------------------

Since you didn't specify an equal distribution, it would be split initially as 9 and 8, then as 6 and 3, and lastly as 2 and 1.
