So let me get this straight. I click on your offer, I pay you 100$ to offset the CO2 that I generated today and you PROMISE that you will plant a tree in return?

Seriously?

Check out the website of "Climate Care" or "CarbonNeutral". Wow.

I think I will start my own company, promising these things.

They are like indulgences in that they make certain kinds of useful conduct more acceptable.

Indulgences funded the restoration of the physical infrastructure of the Vatican, in and of itself a laudable goal.

Offset certificates reward companies with smaller carbon footprints and penalize those with larger ones (who do nothing to clean up). That too is a laudable goal.

Both try to manipulate human behavior but that's nothing new, its written into many of our laws. For example, the tax code gives a break to those with more children, thereby indirectly promoting larger families. The tax code gives a break to those who are married, thereby directly endorsing marriage.

Money is and always has been more than a means to purchase goods a services. It is now and forever will be an instrument of social policy.
