I have a pure bred Saint Bernard. She is always able to find the butter. I have covered it and hid it behind stuff, she always gets it. Even if there is other food she could possibly get to she will nab the butter!
Any ideas why?

Well, it has an aroma, and dogs just seem to love it! I have a hard time keeping it away from my TALL dogs, especially one, who goes searching for it..
It can bring on a pancreatic attack, so I worry that she will find it once too often..
Note: Dogs can open fridge, so it has to be kept on a high window sill...lol..its just that sometimes I leave it on the counter while I'm cooking..and forget to watch that thief!

I own a Saint Bernard also. Mine would pick the butter off the cabinet before he bothers anything else also. It is hard to put something out of the reach of a saint Bernard because of their size they sure can manage to get what they want..(LOL)
Mine has never opened the refrigerator, so I keep my butter in there. Too much butter is not good for the dog, so finding a place to keep it from the dog is the best thing to do. Maybe you can get a empty coffee can and place the butter down in there and put the lid on it. I have had to do this on certain things to keep away from my dog and it seems to work. Good luck, and i know what your going through with your saint Bernard, but even with their bad habits they are soooooooo lovable and cannot help from loving them.

Have you considered storing the butter either on the top shelf in the pantry/food cupboard or in the fridge/freezer? If not, do that. I know Bernard's are big dogs but she won't be able to get the butter on the highest shelf (that you can reach).

I always keep my butter in a butter dish in the cupboard until I am ready to use it and then promptly put it back. That way it remains soft, but is up out of reach. Hope this helps. I store it in front of the bowls in the cupboard. :-)

I had a cat once that was the same way, I think its cause of the texture. If your using the salted butter it might be for the salt in it.
Who could really say though... pets are just weird in there own personal way.
