The Apple 2, based on the Motorola 6502 chip, was the most used computer in schools in the early years, however colleges and universities were timesharing with big machines like the IBM 370 and the Data General Cyber 64's in the late 70's

In 1975, HP came out with a hand-held computer that used magnetic strips to load and save programs. It was programmed using assembly language. It was most likely the first small computer ever used in schools. I used it in the service as a navigation tool in P3 aircraft.

The first 'personal' computer I had used in college was an IMSAI 8080 , based on the Intel 8080 chip and running CPM. It actually ran a version of AUTOCAD, and that was in 1978.

CPM migrated onto the 8-bit Zilog Z80 and then the Intel 8086. The Intel 16-bit 80286 was adopted as the IBM PC architecture and in the 1980's fostered the 80386,80486 and the venerable Pentium.

During the same time period, the first Macintosh and Lisa were introduced using the Motorola 68000 chip.

Hope this helps.

(oh, and forgot to mention, the first popular word processor that ran on early CPM machines was Wordstar, and the first spreadsheet, VisiCalc. All of today's office tools are modeled after these innovative applications.)
