I was always taught as a child that they were caused by putting dirty fingers, pencils, etc. in my mouth, which I'm sure could be a cause of them.
According to wikipedia.org, the exact cause of canker sores "is unknown. In some cases they are thought to be caused by an overreaction by the body's own immune system. Factors that appear to provoke them include stress, fatigue, illness, injury from accidental biting, hormonal changes, menstruation, sudden weight loss, food allergies, and deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid...A well-known cause for ulcers in the mouth is when the skin inside the mouth is opened up, a common cause of this is biting one's lip or any tissue within the mouth."
They normally heal on their own within 1-2 weeks, and the pain can be treated with a mouth gel like Anbesol or Campho-Phenique. Warm salt water also helps, I've used that. Keep up good oral hygiene and avoid spicy foods till it’s healed. You can also try a commercial mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide, Colgate makes one called Peroxyl, or make your own with equal parts water and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution, commonly available in drugstores.
Hope you feel better soon.

This results from a deficiency in vitamin B2 (Riboflavin). Try eating more foods rich in this vitamin. i.e.: milk, liver, kdiney, yeast, cheese, fish and eggs.
I think you should also go to the chemist and get a good multivitamin B complex supplement. Just ask the pharmacist to recommend a good quality brand to buy. Avoid synthetic vitamins, very hard to digest.
You also need to make sure you are getting enough of the B12 and the rest of the B vitamins so a supplement will ensure that.
Good natural sources of B12 are:- liver, beef, pork, fish, eggs, milk and cheese.
Other symptoms of B2 defiencys are sore lips and tongue, grainy and sandy feeling eyes, cracking and splitting skin around fingernails. You are probably experiencing B12 deficiencies as well then ie: heart palpitations, sweating in the head and hands, depression, fatigue and exhaustion, irritability, inability to concentrate, moodiness, dizziness and foggy thinking.
