Pertaining to firearms, a magazine is a container that holds ammunition, whether it is a compartment in the body of the weapon, or a detachable component.
A clip is a metal part that holds ammunition for loading into the magazine.
A magazine has moving parts(spring, magazine follower, etc.) Almost all semi-auto weapons use magazines, whether detachable separate units, or a fixed part of the weapon, as the SKS or M-1 Garand rifles.
A clip has no moving parts and is usually one or two pieces formed into a unit. An SKS uses a one piece steel spring stripper clip to load ammo into its' magazine well. An M-1 Garand uses a one piece steel spring clip, holding 8 rounds, and is loaded into the mag well with the ammo, and is ejected with the last of the 8 rds in the clip.
M-16's and their predecessor, the M-14, among others use two piece formed stripper clips, along with a stripper guide, to load ammo into magazines.

Goes back to when black powder was store in a cool place called a magazine. A gun clip on refers to firearms that take clips like the M-1 Garand, a magazine is enclosed like the M-16 magazine.

A magazine is spring feed or has other moving parts. A clip is has no moving parts (such as stripper clips older military rifles). Lots of purists will get on you about the use of the word clip.

Clip is popular venacular, so I don't mind clip, mag, or magazine, although I usually say mag or magazine.
