It would depend on the strain of bacteria that is causing the infection. For example, for a Staph. aureus infection, espically in an HDU/ICU vancomycin is percribed. However, this will do nothing for VRSA, and so other antibiotics are also used. Except that doctors don't realise that Methicillin can be used to treat VRSA.
