According to Amazon reviews, chessmaster 10th edition seems to be the most popular. It's almost as good as Fritz and it is much more user friendly.

I've also wondered the same thing, so I researched it a while ago. Chessmaster appears to be in the lead for chess novices, whereas Fritz is the leader for those with a serious interest in chess. Chessmaster is like Dr. Ross Geller on Friends; fun with a subtle intellectual side. Fritz is like Ben Stein; very intellectual with a fun side.

Unless if you want to spring for a really costly computer(some chess engines need unbelievable computers to be useable). Chessmaster is the best.
