I'll say up front that I have a bias being that I am in the Army National Guard but here's my take on it...

First of all, the Guard is probably the BEST way to serve your country, state and local community. No other organization has a dual mission like the Guard. You can save people from hurricanes, floods, snow storms, etc, etc or you can fight the nation's wars. It's very rewarding. I think I've about done it all in my time.

Second, if you're looking for an education, in some states the Guard offers full tuition for any state sponsored school. I have soldiers in my unit who attend University of Kentucky and University of Louisville for near nothing when they use the tuition assistance, GI Bill, and drill pay.

In the environment we're in, today, the Guard is on a rotation cycle. You will know when you're going to deploy at least 5 years out. I'm in Iraq, now. I know that I am scheduled to deploy with another unit in 2013. That gives me lots of planning time before the next one. Also, as of this past January, we are only mobilized for 12 months at a time and not the typical 15 to 18 months we're in right now. So that part is getting better.

I hope this helps.

If you husband has the proper education then by all means join the US Air Force. It s a cushier service Than the others. Very light basic training and if you are lucky you be assigned to a technical team in electronics and this is where the good jobs are. Good learning for the future as well. If you like engines and mechanics there are numerous jobs in this area.
I was in the Air Force and I enjoyed it very much. Got a chance to do a little flying as well, not in combat but as an add on who helped maintain the radar and scopes. The were plenty of job offersd after I left the service but I went into a different field. My mistake. I should have stayed in the service.

If I had to do it all over again I would have become a Marine, but if its an education that he wants and a promising career to boot, then by all means join the Air Force, they have the best chow, better atmosphere all around, ad the best in service education programs, I spent 13 years on active duty and I'm in the guard now, you wouldn't want him in the navy, those poor guys are gone way too long away from family.

Air Force!! Huah!!! Every branch has pretty much all the same benefits. but the AF is very proud of how mnay of its enlisted members get their degrees. Go to a recruiter and ask him/her to show you the statistics on how many enlisted members of each branch get their bachelors degree...the AF by far surpasses the rest. But the benefits like I said are all pretty much the same. And everyone is involved in the war right now...theres no way around it really. If you enlist in any branch thats a risk you have to be willing to take, sorry. But its up to your husband really...but the Air Force is the best!! haha!

Navy... It is next to impossible so sink a navy ship. They all have the same education and benefits. The coast guard is used even if we are not at war. They get sent out to protect the coast from drug runners and such. In the air force, they are really pampered though, so the base housing is SO much better and they take care of their people first. I did navy, so I am biased.

Air force, if you're looking not to get blown up. Airplanes stay "in the rear, with the gear". Also, plane electronics need to be air conditioned, so he will be too. And, based in one place, he will be able to go to school that they pay for. I served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps, and bounced around so often that all my classes would be incomplete. They only pay if you get good grades. Don't listen to recruiters, they have a quota. Speak with an officer, and GET IT IN WRITING!!!!!!!!!!! before he signs anything.
