I recently got a new PowerShot S3 IS for my birthday. For some reason lately when I turn it on and then open the LCD screen, either the image will still stay in the view finder instead of going to the screen, or when i turn the screen fully around and then "close" it (so the screen is facing me still) the image will go to the view finder like if I had shut it so the actual front of the screen is hidden... if you get what I mean (I suck at explaining things).

I have only had this for like a week and hardly used it (so I haven't dropped it or anything like that - it just suddenly started to happen) and it cost around $700 so I hope there is nothing seriously wrong with it. Has this happened to anyone? Is it a power saving thing because the battery is running low? (I doubt that though because sometime I can push the screen a bit and it will flicker on and off as if something is pressing against something else telling the camera I have shut the screen)..

First, check the button that switches from viewfinder to LCD screen ... as I discovered, you have to push the button twice to change from one to the other. The button says "dis" (I think) and is to the far right and below where the LCD screen when in back of the camera.

here is the sequence of the display button:
1) LCD Screen without information
2) LCD screen with information (histogram, etc)
3) Viewfinder without information
4) Viewfinder with information

Also, even if you turn the Camera off, the display feature remembers where it was and opens to the same setting it was on when you turned it off.

If after checking how the display button is set, and verifying you haven't accidentally hit it while opening or closing the LCD screen, then I would suggest taking the camera in and exchanging.

This is a great camera, I got one for my birthday two weeks ago, too, and just love it!

Here are a few steps if one fails go to the next step:
1) Change batteries
2) Make sure the menu settings are correct (read manuel for specific instructions)
3) Test the screen if it works properly if you review pictures
4) If screen does not work even when tryign to use menu or reviewing pictures call Canon and since its under warrienty they will fix it

I think its a loose connector or something isnt connecting properly. It could be as simple as a wrong menu change. But test all of those options. Someone might have thrown off the connectors some how.

There is either something wrong, a short, or you are accidentally hitting the button that changes from screen to viewfinder. ONLY you can determine if you are hitting that button or not.

Otherwise contact Canon, you have a 1 year warranty. Most stores will exchange it if it is in good condition an sold 30 days or less.
