James 1:5-6
5. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and ubraideth not; and it shal be given him.
6. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave upon th sea driven with the wind and tossed.

God's purposes for you are revealed by the fruits of your labors. If these fruits are not glorifying God, then they are not the purposes God has in store for you.
One must approach God with more than a tabula rasa (blank slate) of mind. Something inside of you is pushing in one direction or another. Pray to God about this. Most likely the "push" you are receiving is the work of the Holy Spirit.
God hears all the prayers of the righteous. But consider the following:
A Christian hunter is hunting bears in the woods. While walking up a hill he grabs a branch for leverage and it breaks sending the hunter tumbling down the hill, gun flying off elsewhere. When the hunter dusts himself off he sees a huge bear charging him. The hunter begins running, but trips and falls, landing on his knees. Seizing the opportunity, and being a good Christian, the hunter begins to pray, "Lord, make this bear a Christian."
The woods are quiet, the hunter turns and, Hallelujah! He sees the bear on his knees, paws together, praying! Listening, he hears the bear praying, "Father, bless this food to my body."
The key point here is that God answers prayers of the righteous, but the answer you get may not be the answer you want, BUT it will always be the right answer.
I speak to God just as I write these words to you now. I have a conversation with Him each day, usually out under the stars late at night as my family sleeps. My prayers are conversations that follow a pattern. I start every prayer with the following: "Most merciful God, not my will, but yours be done." I repeat that phrase often during my prayers. Sometimes I will do so for tens of times just to quiet my mind and make it open to hearing from my Creator.
Use the following pattern in all your prayers and you will see them answered: Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. See the links below for more information. (acronym: ACTS)

One obvious purpose is found in Romans 8:28,29 - we are predestianted to be conformed to the image of His Son. Ephesians 4:13 talks about this too. When you become a believer in Jesus Christ the first thing God wants you to do is become like His Son (which is a life-long journey) and model Christ-likeness to others. The He wants you to grow and discover what your spiritual gifts are (i.e. exhortation, helps, teaching, etc.), then He wants you to use them in the church to help others grow. Those are some obvious ones. Then He wants you to share Christ with everyone (Matthew 28:19, 20) and help them grow to be like Him. Once you start doing all of this He directs your life in other ways. I think we sometimes focus too hard on God revealing a "special plan" for our lives and miss the obvious things in His Word. He gave us His Word to read and apply the obvious, then make decisions of our own on what we want to do with our lives based on applying basic biblical principles (yes, God gives a choices!). This was very hard for me to understand and accept because was stuck in a mold of "God has a perfect plan for my life and if I don't figure it out and do it exactly then I am sinning." This is not what God says in His Word.

You can't always know. God works in mysterious ways. He knows what will happen years from now. You may have a gift or talent that God wants you to use in some way, and you have to trust that He knows best.

Fasting seems to be the way to draw closer to God. It will humble your Spirt and put the flesh under subjection. At this point, we are able to hear that tiny beautiful voice that is telling us which way and what He wants us to do in this life.
Famous fasters of the Bible: Moses, Jesus, Elijah to name a few.

In the first instance: obey every written statement by the King Jesus, resulting that you have personal experience with Him all along.
From that close 'friendship' He will easily speak into your heart (and you can easily hear Him speaking), such that you will clearly know His calling for you.
Be blessed Bro/Sis!

God may have had an idea for you BUT you make your own destiny! Humans were given options in life.

You don't. If you believe in this sort of thing, you do just that, believe in it. You don't know what He has in store for you, you just go with the flow.
