? what is your definition of Dark Ages, exactly?

Let me put you up to speed on a bit of history, because there does really seem to be a HUGE misconception about the "Dark Ages" and Catholicity. Though your question seems to be rather anger filled simply by the fact you stated "Shouldn't everyone be anti Catholic", I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and answer this. I have studied History, am Catholic...so here it goes.

Historians consider the 1500s the Renaissance/Early Modern period, so even the date is misleading. These stories are so inaccurate it is difficult to believe anyone with a higher than elementary education could take them seriously. Anyhoo...

Some uninformed people today believe these tales, since they are broadly spread by movies and television shows presenting the people of the Middle Ages as dingy, drab, and wallowing in miserable hovels while all the nobles lived in castles. Sometimes the falsification is deliberate, sometimes unconscious; put always the past is altered to suit the prejudice of the present against the time of Christendom.

Now, let me present some historical facts in order to educate those who are ignorant...which you appear to be, which is never bad as long as you learn, okay?

It is an insidious contrivance, in my view, to present the marvelous Age of Faith as a backward era filled with a superstitious, barbarian people who were more unintelligent and irrational than modern people. I think is time to lay such myths to rest

It is enough to view the grand cathedrals that were erected in the Middle Ages to realize that the people who built and enriched them with glorious works of art were far from backward.
• Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, constructed in the 13th century;
• the Cathedral of Cologne, on the Rhine, begun in 1248, setting next to the Town Hall in the old section of the city;
• the magnificent Cathedral of Milan in Lombardy, Italy begun in the 14th century and still today, the third largest in the world;
• the Cathedral of Segovia, built in the 1500s, the 14th century;
• the island monastery Mont St. Michel in France dating from the 8th Century and today a premier tourist site;
• St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece in Vienna, built largely in the 14th and 15th centuries;
• Salisbury Cathedral, the English version of the Gothic completed in the 13th century,
• St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, begun c. 1050 and completed in the 1090s. As the private chapel of the Doges, it became a focus for state ceremonies as well as a place of pilgrimage.

This is not to mention the Cathedrals of Laon, Strasbourg, Worms, Siena, Pisa, the Duomo, or the sprawling Santiago de Compestella, the 13th century pilgrimage site crowning a city that looks today much as it did in the 1500s.

The list goes on and on. Every year Americans travel to Europe to view and marvel over these architectural masterpieces that reflect the spirit and mentality of the Catholic peoples who built Christendom.

So far....what is "Dark" about the "Dark Ages"??

Then there is medicine...and knowledge of plants....the leanred men who literally hand copied every single Bible, by hand, by the candle light, losing their eyesight as a result. The lifestyle of the people was peaceful, everyone was part of a community. There was the "Lord" and the 'serfs'. It was the Lord of the Manor, or community. village who was responsible for the well being of all, in physicial, spiritual, and mental. Life was precious then, more so than now. I fail to see what is so horrible about the MIDDLE AGES.

The Holy Roman Empire / Catholic Church has killed millions and millions of people in its 1700 year history (The scientists of Europe, the Spanish Inquistion, explotation of South America, etc.).

Some believe they kept knowledge alive during the Dark Ages; the reality is the Catholics swept in the Dark Ages by killing those that had knowledge. The Crusades were more about destroying the Arabs, their great libraries and their knowledge of astronomy, geography, sciences, etc. than saving the Holy Land. This is a primary reason why so many Arabs hate the West.

Personally, I believe in Christ but could never become a Catholic. Over 300 years passed from the time of Christ's death until Constatine created the new state religion that evolved into the Catholic Church. Their history demonstrates it is a church crafted by men for the power and wealth for men.

Hi! Just like all Germans are bad since they killed the jews in the holocaust or we should all be anti-Male because the Catholic Church was wonderful--made by Jesus Christ and Men messed it up by being arrogant and judgmental? The Roman Catholic Church is the reason we have Christianity, religious art, music, Santa Fe, Christmas, Easter, The Bible, Santa Clause, Valentine's Day, and endless beautiful things. The Church, that is 2000 yrs. old is God's gift to man---Men and women abuse power, and Sin crawls in. Every religion of the world has good and not so good points, but hollywood and intolerant people love to bash the Church. If you read more in depth about the Dark Ages, you would find that for all the bad that happened, much good did too. It was humanity at the time that was lacking in morals not ust the Church. Remember, there would be no other Christian Churches if not for the Catholic Church and the Catholic Church gathered and chose the material that makes up the Bible. I don't know what religion you are, but don't stir up hate anywhere. I love my faith and I Love my Jesus , I am personally saved and I love people. ---of all faiths--even ones that put men's bad actions of long ago on my shoulders as a Catholic. What those men did back then was from a lack of faith, education, and not following the teachings of the Church. They also were in fear of dying from disease, despair, and world disasters. It's even wrong for us to judge them, because if we were in their shoes, we don't know how we would have acted. The bad things that happened were from demonic forces that makes people sin. Get mad at the negative forces instead of a Church that went through a big tribulation, but who always seems to make it through--"the gates of hell will not prevail against it" Now in this new millenium you will see many more battles with the Catholic Church and demon forces--they hate the true, first Church. The negative forces hate babies and hate love , marriage and fidelity. Good luck!

The Church does not deny the fact there were atrocities performed in the PAST. Don't tell me Protestants are pure and holy. They have their share of filth. Why should anyone be anti-Catholic? Pure waste of time and energy. Love one another is the commandment of Christ. Why should one channel hatred towards the Church which CHRIST FOUNDED 2,000 years ago? Being anti-catholic is being anti-Christian. If Catholicsm did not prevail in Europe, we would all be Moslems had Charles Martel not conquerred the Moorish troops. Then we would truly not have free will.

The Dark Ages were the result of the fall of the Roman Empire, and the reordering of the whole world, in it's wake.

The only thing that preserved any semblance of civilization during those times was the Catholic Church, which literally saved the world.

You are an ignorant fool, and an even worse historian.

In the dark ages, Religious leaders were considered to be some of the most powerful people, Catholocism was the primary religion and people used it as an excuse to exploit and abuse the lower class of people. It is not in Catholic doctrine to behave in that way.

The Catholics are no worse than any other religion and better than most. The worst are the god-bothering fundies of all religions particularly the American so-called Christian ones. I am very anti-christian because of the hate, bigotry and intolerance shown by these fundies. The Catholoics are OK.

You need to be much more specific. During the dark ages the Church was a major force in maintaining knowledge and learning. I presume this is not the 'history' you are referring to. Be specific. Also, cite sources.

The Crusades took place because the Roman Catholic Church translated the Bible into Latin, locked it up behind gates and said, "Thus and thus is what God says." From this we got inquisitions, crusades, indulgences and the like.

When the reformation translated the Bible into German and English, the average person could stand up to the evil popery and say "No!" for the Bible says thus and thus. Then the killing and fleecing soon stopped.

However, you cannot really blame a religion today for the sins of their forebearers. Nor is it wise to be ant-Catholic. However, I have not heard any recants from their camp either.

Who are you to judge? Could you show me a reliable and unbiased history book which condemns the Catholic Church for its actions during that period? You should research your question first before posting it on YA.
May the Lord's peace be with you!
