I have been told by friends and family I would be too trigger happy. I agree, i probably could not hold my tongue if i went to a bad domestic or something, is there a way i can change that or is it just me and accept it?

CJ is correct. As a Police Officer, you will be provoked on a regular basis more strongly than anyone has ever provoked you before. If you cannot hold your tongue when the people around you mess with you now, you will be an Officer that doesn't make it through your probationary period. People will try to get you to yell at them, fight them, anything they can to rattle you. Self-control is one of the most vital qualities a Police Officer must have to function at work. If you are having doubts now, find a different career.

To answer your question, it's just you...accept it and move on. You cannot fundamentally change your personality to suit a job.

I'm a retired Deputy Sheriff with 23 years service.......I hope I can answer your question for you.

Let's address "trigger happy", ok?

First of all, you're going to be trained quite thoroughly in the use of your weapons, and you're going to have a strict policy to go by in their use. Brandishing your weapon, threatening people, or pulling the trigger without provocation will not only get you fired, but you will end up in jail. I hope you've never had to fire at anyone, nevertheless kill someone. But if you are ever in that position, it's not Hollywood. People don't get back up. It's a bloody mess, and it's heartbreaking to know that you had to take a life. It's a waste of humanity, no matter how bad that person was. Taking a life is the last resort, and that's how it's supposed to be.

Ok......let's address your "mouth".

There's an old saying, "Never let your mouth write a check your a** can't cash. " You're not at a domestic dispute to further agitate the situation, you're there to calm it down. By you shooting off your mouth, you can escalate that situation into violence that can get YOU shot and your partner shot. You have to consider your partners too. They want to go home to their families, and I'd hate to be you when you have to explain to their wives and children why you got out of control and got their loved one killed.

To be an officer, you need to be the peacemaker. You need to be the authority who takes control of bad situations and restores order. If you cannot control your emotions, then you are looking into the wrong kind of work.

Best wishes to you.

Well once becoming a cop, you kind of become void to the problems. They don't affect you the way you think they will after awhile. Initially they all bother you, but eventually, you realize that they are all the same. For every officer though, there is a hot button. For some it's kids being abused, others, it's men hitting women. In times like those, you need to just know to let your partner take over. In my case, it's animals being mistreated or having to kill a loose dog who charges at you. I can't do it. I know I will be attacked one day, but I'm fine with that...My partner probably won't even let that happen.
Anyways, as far as being trigger happy, that's not really an option because if you do pull the trigger and you weren't justifiably fearing for your safety, you will do time. So it's not something you will need to change...it will just happen. Go ahead and try for it...if its not for you, you will know.

You can apply in the Police Force and the recruitment office will determine if you are qualified or not. Your friends and relatives can only comment but the recruitment office will have the final decision of you becoming a cop.

Eventually, you will be another numb, insensitive person doing a boring and underpaid job where everybody hates you. Just like the department of motor vehicles workers.

Most department test for stability as part of the mental health tests. If you have "anger management" issues the test will probably pick up on it.

If you have problems keeping your emotions under control, law enforcement is NOT the right choice for you. It can only land you in trouble and possibly jail.

That's something you need to be asking yourself.
