Myself and my mother are the only ones in the family not allergic to any kind of animal. I would really like to have a pet that requires responsibility and that can show a little more activity than a bird or small rodent. My house is perfect for a medium sized dog but here are the problems... 1: My mother does not want the responsibility of having to take care of the animal (cleaning, vet, food, shedding fur, MONEY, death) 2: One family member is allergic to dogs. If anyone knows of any kinds of dogs that are not too large and not too small and do not shed a lot, I would appreciate the info :)

Silky Terriers do not get that undercoat, and therefore do not shed. They're no too small and they're not big. They have great personalities... I have 2 and they are a part of the family. If your mom doesn't want the responsibilities... are YOU willing to step up to the plate and fulfill those duties? One thing that is inevitable is that she will become attached, and someday it will die... just as we all do...

Shots/vet, cleaning up feces, and food are things you can do if you are able.

Good luck!! : D

You may want, but the rest of the family doesn't, that should be the end of the discussion, you cannot impose your wants over your families and risks your sisters health, trying to do so only makes you look selfish and irresponsible.

when you own your own home and can pay for your own dog and its expenses that is when you can get a dog and you will able to own them for the next 40 to 60 years or how however long you live and have the ability to care for them, as long as you make sure to pick a spouse who feels the same way you do about dogs

the following was written by a dog breeder about allergies and dogs

Firstly, there is no dog that is non-allergenic. It is a myth that dogs with short hair are non-allergenic.

What people with allergies are allergic to is a protein that is found primarily in the saliva and urine.
When the dog (or cat for that matter) grooms itself by licking its fur, it is placing the allergen on its coat where the particles become airborne and find their way throughout your house....and into your lungs.

So if you are allergic or your kids are allergic to dogs or cats DO NOT GET ONE.

It's not fair to the allergy sufferer or the animal that will eventually be given away.

If you already have a dog and develop allergies there are some things you can do.

The best solution for your physical health would be to remove the pet from your home. However many people with allergies (it all depends on how severe) do live reasonably well with their pets save for the occasional sniffle.

If you do have allergies and are living with pets here are some things you can try;

Do not let the dog enter your bedroom. You sleep 8 hours a day there. Minimize the allergens that can get into this room.
Get some kind of ventilation system that exchanges the air in your house with fresh air from outside.
Vacuum frequently
Wash your pet frequently (ask your vet for a schedule for your breed)
Have someone who is not allergic brush your pet OUTDOORS as frequently as possible.
Wash your hands after handling the pet

These steps should reduce but not eliminate the amount of allergens present in your home. They may lessen your allergic symptoms but they will not eliminate your allergies.

I hesitate to suggest a breed to you if everyone in your family isn't on board with having a dog. Also since your mom doesn't want the expense and such that goes into a dog do you make enough money on your own to pay for everything it will need plus back up money for emergencies?

As far as breeds I would recommend you look at www.akc.org and research dog breeds that appeal to you to find out how much they shed and what types of homes they are best in. Good luck

Dont get a dog. If your mother doesn't want one, and theres another member thats allergic, this is just a recipe for...... another dog in the dog pound. Dogs are expensive, and time consuming. Wait until you are out of the house and on your own.

A Basenji!

"The Basenji has no dog smell and, in fact, grooms itself very much like a cat. This breed also sheds little to no hair and often makes a good choice of pet for people prone to allergies. Very little grooming is required with the Basenji."

poodles generally do not affect allergies.

but if there isn't anyone in the family who wants to take responsibility for the dog, you shouldnt' get one. they deserve to be in homes where they'll be properly taken care of. Dogs are a 15 year responsibility. They can be the best friends in the world, but they certainly are not just something to get when you want a companion for the moment.

i wont tell you what breed to get but just no that there is no such thing as a HYPOALLERGIENIC DOG!! "Unequivocally, there is no such thing as a non-allergic dog,"
all dogs lick themselves (which deposits saliva), and produce dander which is usually what people have the allergy to. people sit there and say or advertise saying the dog is hypoallergenic but thats completly 100% untrue. so honestly id saving having a dog till all grown up and in your own house!!
