Try to boot from the windows intallation cd and then run a repair install

You didn't actually say anything about when it shuts down but based on the few seconds and assuming you are running Windows, I would guess either a boot sector malicious logic or overheating of the CPU...

Do you mean on a desktop computer? If so, then it probably has case status detection and the BIOS is set to shut down when the case is opened.

We need a bit more info than that :).
Does it beep? if it does then the fan may not be spinning,the ram sticks may be dirty,either of these will shut down as it is a protection so you don't cook you pc
