do you give them a chance to sell their pitch, ignore them, let them down politely?
I know girls at bars ignore guys just for fun / boost self esteem / validate themselves sometimes

No one has ever tried to pick me up, or if they did I was oblivious.
But if they were vegetarian, and I was single I'd hear them out.

well, are you the type of person who is more physically stimulated?? then if that is the case, then you should ignore them because you know that you will dump that person as long as a better looking one will come along. Then you will avoid a lot of problems and the possibility of hurting someone in the future.
Although there are exceptions. If you already know the person and like that person deeper than his or her skin, then go for it. you might be stimulated by the conversational sparks that you may have or the things that you may have in common. And who knows, there actually are people who ages better, just like wine. The older they get, the better they look. What makes you think that the ugly duckling now will not look like a hottie 5 yrs from now??
Go for the chemistry, not too much for the beauty.

I'm a man, but I try real hard not to hurt their feelings. I will flirt back a little bit and then excuse myself.
A lot of women can be just plain nasty to people though. This may be because they want to be left alone and guys are coming up to them constantly. Stay confident and try not to make it seem like you're picking them up if that's possible.

I would tell them " sorry I am not interested" if i was single.. or I am in a relationship already even if i wasnt. sometimes the unnattractive men are the ones who will treat you the best. try not to judge people by their appearrance too much. give them a chanch and see who they are on the inside first before slamming the door in their face. :o)

there is nothing wrong with accepting a bit of flattery from someone who is trying to pick u up but u shouldnt ignore them or be rude to them just because u think they are ugly. I think most people would try and pick someone up who is in the samre league as them so maybe u are just as ugly as they are?

not that it happens very often (good looking chicks too, lol) I wouyld talk to them and be friendly but I wouldn't act as if I wanted it to go any further, there's nothing wrong with being nice and talking to them, it makes me feel good when I'm nice to people no matter who they are...unless they're being butt holes towards me then I would ignore them.

We call those people beezys. Unfortunately if you're unattractive you're going to get less people to like you, its common sense. If you want people to like you, then simply try harder to be attractive.

alot times i'll tell them even if i don't have a boyfriend that even though i'm flattered my man wouldn't be and they usually get the hint
