Xanax is not a drug of choice for panic attacks. Being in the benzodiazapam family Xanax is super addicting and will cause seizures when stopped abruptly. Many other options for dealing with panic disorders.

Actually, if you are suffering from panic attacks, one of the best drugs to use are actually SSRIs, a class of antidepressants.
The antidepressant of choice typically with panic disorders is paroxetine, with doses starting at 10mg per day, eventually building to about 40mg/day.
Antidepressants are generally preferred to benzodiazipines, such as xanax, because they are not as addictive, and studies have shown them to be quite beneficial in reducing anxiety. Also SSRIs are considered to be more of a long-term drug when it comes to treating anxiety, whereas benzos are only used for very short periods, and only when absolutely necessary.
Things to note, SSRIs will cause a initial increase in anxiety until the full therapeutic dose kicks in, normally 2-4 weeks. This is something to discuss with your therapist. He may actually prescribe you the xanax for that short period of time, or may suggest something else e.g. relaxation therapies, breathing exercises.
Good Luck

There are much better medication that can help you then xanax. It is much better not to get started with xanax or other medications like it. They are so addicting and have lots of side effects.
Go to your psychiatrist with an open mind and see what he suggests.
He might want to put you on an antidepressent such as Paxil that may help but are not addicting.

Xanax may not be th "magic pill" for you. If you need help with anxiety, then come right out and say it. Practice in the mirror. Say "Dr._____, I came in to see you today because I am having panic attacks. I have heard that medications can help this. I have (# of) attacks / day or week. They are triggered by_____ (or) I don't know what causes them. I just feel (insert specific adj. s here). Please help me." He / she should be A) used to this and B) compassionate. If not -change doctors.

if you have a tightening feeling in side of your body and you feel like you will explode and begin to feel overwheled with warmth then that is the start of a panic attack and you might want to tell the doctor that. if these are occuring at night and you are unable to rest then you might need and anti- ANXIETY med that is what xanax is for.

WHAT THE ****!? If you dont have panic/anxiety attacks, DONT TAKE XANAX. It is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE and often interacts with A LOT of other drugs!!! PLUS, its not very nice to glorify this disorder....it really sucks, you know. feeling like you're going to die and all you can do is curl up on the floor and cry/vomit is NOT SOMETHING TO PRETEND TO HAVE!!!

don't specifically ask for it unless you and your doc openly talk about meds - like cuz you obviously have some education or something
anyway, tell him that you are often suddenly overwhelmed with anxiety. tell him your heart is pounding, your breathing is short, and your mind is racing .
act like they are happening more frequently - tell him you try to watch your breathing and/or remove yourself from the situation when it occurs but nothing seems to help
Good Luck and Enjoy It!! = )

Try identifying the trigger for the panic attacks and remove that from your life. Why put a bandaid on a problem to temporarily mask it, when you could cure it once and for all?

Why do you want Xanax? To abuse or misuse it is just stupidity. Don't lie and scam to feed some sort of ignorant attempt to alter your mental state. If you actually need it, your psychiatrist will offer it first.
