Assuming that you have your XP disk, your start your pc with the Xp disk in the drive and reboot,it should ask you what you want to do,install, yes, this will format your drive etc.etc.,yes,it should then reformat your drive and reinstall XP

While you're waiting for MS to fix the Vista problems. Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

if you just use the upgarde setup then there is a possibility you can remove your vista by going to control panel and look for uninstall WINDOWS VISTA.

but if you make a fresh install of vista you need to format your system drive and reinstall the windows XP.

put the XP bootable cd in the drive and change boot options(generally by pressing DEL or F1 you can go to setup then select Advanced Boot Option,in Advanced Boot Option you change the first boot option to CD/DVD drive and save changes then EXIT),after changing boot option,in the process of Installation of windows XP , select the local drive where windows vista installed .
then install XP in the selected drive.
