Its called a "ramp check" , and yes, I have been asked to show my pilots certificate and medical to a FAA inspector making their rounds on a couple of occasions.
no big deal if you are on the up and up!!
Once was when I ask for and received a special vfr (SVFR)clearance to land at a class C field at night. I was asked to show my Instrument rating when I walked into the FBO to pay for fuel.

Yes, as part of an FAA ramp check. I was also present at the airport when a Charter pilot was ramp checked one time and he had lost his medical and not obtained a copy. His passengers weren't pleased as he was then grounded. It took him 3 hrs to get another medical from the local Medical Examiner!

Absolutely, i fly in the UK where ive been asked for my licence a couple of times. A very regular occurence especially at large flying schools with different staff etc.

Also flown in the US where my nationality meant my UK licence and temporary airman certificate was requested numerous times. So all in all a very much expected part of flying
