I want to know more about greek culture so that if I get invited over for dinner I would be able to impress and gain acceptance from my potentional greek boyfriend's family(he's my ex but I want to get back together). What knowledge should know.I just want them to feel I am smart and good for their son.

well George was very interested in me. His mom actually liked me when I came over the house that day because I introduced myself to her. His family has no problem with me. I worked with his brother and knew him well and am friends with his brothers friends. He's only a little bit Greek, not full fledged greek so that has nothing to do with anything. I just know they have their own traditions,so like his mom might like certain food and I just want to come off as very respectable. I wouldn't want to act a certain way that they'd be upset with because of their culture.ya know what I mean? he only told me he was greek once and he told me he's only a little bit greek, I think on his moms side. his parents were interested about me so that's also a good sign. I hope for non negitive answers. thank you.

Have you seen "My Big Fat Greek Wedding?" If not I highly recommend that you rent it and watch it - its portrayal of how a Greek family feels about a non-Greek marrying into the family is fairly accurate. If the family is traditional, like it sounds like his is, then there may be nothing you can really do about it at all. They will not accept you, at least not right away.

But don't let that stop you. If you are truly in love with him and he with you, then you should just move forward. If you watch the film, you will see that the extended family WILL accept you, you'll notice that the rest of the family loves the man she will marry BEFORE the Dad comes around to it being OK, but in the end he does. And he will in your life as well.

Also, Greek parents are very into the in-laws. They really want to be able to talk and get along with your parents and family as well. If they get to know your parents and have a lot of common interests with them, that helps too.

Remember, when you marry into a a Greek family your family are not in-laws, your families merge together. You become like one big family. This may not be your cup of tea.

Other than that, if they see that you are being good to him, that you truly care for him, and that you make him truly happy, then they will eventually accept you. You don't have to try and be Greek, you just have to care for him. And him for you.

Since you asked twice. I answered twice. ;)

Firstly : Do not talk too much about greek culture. I would not like it, and I am a greek. Secondly, do not tell anyone about this you are reading now. You must try to impress them with some of your culture or by asking some questions about greek culture, that maybe you do not even know the answer. That way you can learn more about the greeks. A good thing would be to try learn some greek words, like the example with Dora you stated. Also, if you are a vegeterian or something please try to hide it. It is really the worst thing that you can say. aybe after a while you will be able to reveal it freely.

I am not Greek and I was dating a Greek guy for several years. His family never accepted me no matter what I did. They were no different than my very Irish side of the family, though. My dad's mother stopped speaking to him because he married my mother who wasn't Irish.
Culture and traditions and maintaining them are very important to certain ethnicities. I know what my mom and dad both went through with their families and the whole not speaking thing. When I saw the same thing starting to happen to me and my boyfriend, I ended the relationship. He ended up marrying a Greek girl even though he swore to me at the time it didnt matter to him.

It won't matter what you do. Greeks are very traditional and frown highly upon their children marrying anyone who isn't Greek. It will cause nothing but heartache and pain for you. He would always choose his family over you and you will never be accepted. Why not learn that now instead of living a life to try and please people who won't be pleased?
