The Western Front was the line where the German Army met the Allied Army. In WWI the tactic was to dig trenches and shoot at each other across a "dead zone". Every now and then one side or the other would jump up and storm the lines of the opposing force, usually suffering heavy losses. It was so named because it was on the Western half of the front lines. It extended from the North Sea to the Swiss Border. The other half of the front was called the Eastern Front (it was on the Eastern side).

The western front was the name the Germans gave a serious of trenches, running from south to north, most of it in France for 420 miles in WW1 (1914 - 1918). Here, in opposing trenches, the Germans and the allies would fight each other. The space between the opposing trenches was "No Men's Land". Some historians believe, that as much men died in the horrible conditions of the trenches, as from actual enemy fire. The Eastern front was more dynamic, but not less brutal. Here Mister Russian Winter won the game for the allies on the vast plains of the east. The world didn't learn a thing from WW1 and is still suffering from the political mistakes made during the peace settlements in Versailles in 1919, lead by President Wilson. (By the way, Germany didn't start the war).

It was the front line in France and Belgium between the german army and the british and french armies. It was called the Western Front because it was to the west of Germany.
The other front was the Eastern Front to the east of Germany where the Germans faced the Russians
