I go to McDonalds and order 4 drinks for everyone in the car. I already have a coffee in the cupholder so I dump it and shake it out and ask the lady to throw it away. She says she is not allowed to throw away customers trash. I say " I am ordering a drink for my cupholder and it is full, you can't throw away this cup?" Who had the bad manners - me for asking or her to toos it or her for refusing?

I believe that she was being rude. Customer service is almost non existent anymore. What would be the big deal in taking the darn thing from you and throwing it away??? For goodness sake!

I'm sorry to say that you have the bad manners, even though the customer is usually right. She is a McDonald's employee, not a sanitation department worker. Her job is to feed people and take their orders, not throw away other peoples trash. I'm sure if you looked a few feet ahead of you, you would see a garbage can!

hmmm I don't think she had bad manners. It was company policy. After all it could have been a cup from another company - why should they pick up the trash from say KFC?
If everyone asked her to do that then the rubbish would be overflowing and it would hold up the queue as well.

Her job is to serve the food not throw rubbish away.
Maybe keep a plastic bag in your car to throw your rubbish in and then clean it out every now and then.

If every customer asked her to throw something away she might need a dumpster instead of a trash can. You shouldn't have dumped the coffee out on the pavement either.

You are not rude to ask her to do it. However I have seen signs now in the drive-up of fast food places that say they are not allowed to throw customer's trash away. This doesn't seem like a big deal to me, but it is what it is. No one was rude in this case.

Seems like a stupid rule - but remember, there are a**ho*es out there that would hand her bags of trash to throw away. They made the rule so the workers don't have to make a decision if it is ok or not. Keeps them from having to think. So it is neither of the above.
Bad manners if you got rude about it though.

There is a trash can after the second window. You didn't have to ask the server to throw the cup out for you. You could have done it yourself.

It really is a OSHA (Occupational Safety Health Association) rule that the drive through location cannot take debris (trash) through their window. She would get fined and could potentially loose her employment.

Neither of you had bad manners, we just live in a time where companies have to protect themselves to the point it can get ridiculous!

Neither, she is simply stating her company's policy. She is following the orders given to her buy her boss. It was slightly uncalled for to make a comment back after she explained the reasoning behind her answer.

In addition, I'm pretty sure McDonald's offers trash cans in their drive-throughs.

You for asking. Throw you're own trash away, what is she, you're freakin' servant?

It would be policy for staff to refuse to throw customer trash out in case there are needles, drugs in there somewhere etc
