Why is Chocolate Lethal?
Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

Antidote Chocolate

Not all dogs die after eating chocolate, but some do have an allergic reaction that can cause death. Call ur vet, perhaps he will accept payments for seeing ur dog or maybe he can tell u what u can do at home immediately, at least to see what reaction ur dog will have from the chocolate. Don`t attempt any home remedies without ur vets approval, surely he is humane enough to at least give u advice on what u should do and look for in ur dog, but u may need to have her seen by a professional if she becomes ill or u may end up losing her.

If it just happened, making her vomit will reduce the amount of chocolate in her system (give hydrogen peroxide anywhere from 1/2 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons depending on size of dog), but if she starts acting sick she will have to go to the vet, as there is no antidote for it, you just try to support them while the toxin makes its way out of the system. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is, it's the cocoa that's bad. I don't know how much frosting she ate or how much cocoa would be in it.

It is definitely NOT an allergic reaction, it makes the heart beat very fast, like cocaine in humans. And charcoal is not an antidote, either. It's part of the supportive care.

First and foremost: Clam down. Being paniced will not help your dog.

Second: read the ingredients of the frosting. Most frostings use artificial flavor and color (both of which means lots of food coloring and sugar)

Third: IF it says on the ingredients label "Dark Chocolate" look at how far down the list it is. IF it does not say "Dark Chocolate or Milk Chocolate" or if you do not see the word cocoa anywhere do not frete. Your pup will be okay.

Fourth: IF "Dark Chocolate" is in the ingredient list and is one of the first THREE (3) ingredients, call a poison control. IF it is FOUR (4) or down on the list, wait to see how she is. If she is still bad in the morning call your vet and ask them for some help.

The only real antidote as such, is for the vet to give the dog an injection to make the dog vomit. They may also give a charcoal tablet to line the stomach to prevent the chocolate from being absorbed. If you cant afford to visit the vet, at least give them a call, they might be able to suggest something. Your dog may be alright. Depending on her weight and breed, she may not have eaten enough to harm her.

If it was a small amount and she's a big dog, don't worry. If it's a small dog, just keep an eye on her. My mom is a human nurse, and for humans anyway, throwing up doesn't always help. I looked it up for you, just read it and see if it give you any help.

is she having a reaction? dogs don't always get sick from chocolate. it's just not good for them. it ussually acts like an allegeric reaction, like in humans. check the poison control site or 800#, they do have some pet answers, to see for sure.

ring the vet and ask how much it will cost, or try ringing the poisons centre.
