Try to let your boyfriend down as gently as possible because the less pain you inflict the easier it is for both sides to move on. Be honest with him about why you feel that things are not working out and don't bring someone else into the pic as the reason for leaving. Leave any new men out until you've made a clean break and give yourself a couple months to make sure that the break up was the best thing to do for either or both sides.

Tell your boyfriend that you like him but feel things are not working out, and you are ending the relationship. Wish him good luck and hope he meets someone special. Then cut all communication with him and wait a while before going out and meeting someone new. You may want to take this time to self discover why the old guy was not a good fit and what characteristics you would like to see in the new guy.

Be honest and up front with him. It may be the difficult thing to do right now, but there will be no confusion and he will respect you for it, unless he's a loser stalker type, in which case you shouldn't have been dating him in the first place.

You can talk openly and honestly with him about your feelings and your desire to move on, and the need to have a bigger circle of 'friends' and lovers. Or you could just hook up with someone else and have him walk in on you. But that might create fireworks. But then so might the first option.

Good luck,
