This year I have no roommate, but I will next year. What if she finds out? Would I be forced to go to a psychiatrist at my college campus? Would it go on my record? Also, would the information be kept private from parents?

I am over 18.
I'm trying to stop... but it's hard to. I've been suffering from depression for about five years now.

BTW: I'm a mild self injurer, but one nonetheless which is a problem. No one can SEE my scars (unless they were paying attention to me intently), but if I'm caught in the act of it by someone (or was heard - I use walls) and then it's reported...

I will try to answer you without giving too much information away.
Double J does not have the correct information. Please disregard it (with all due respect)
You can hide this behavior for decades and not be found out but this has its disadvantages.
See a counselor -a wise old woman, if possible- and after quite a bit of work you can overcome this behavior.
I started when I was about 9 and stopped in my mid 30's. I did not seek help until I was 30. My birthday was the worst.
What worked best for me was behavior modification so that when an episode came up I was able to redirect my efforts toward the constructive side of things.
Be patient with yourself. You are beautiful and you have a beautiful body. The counselor will teach you how to climb out.
As far as the information being private from your parents, ask the medical office about this and they will give it to you in writing and verbal-what they will do and what they will not do, confidenciality info, everything.
Best of luck to you.

If she finds out, she will be very concerned. She might request a transfer. She will also probably talk to the RA, then the world of support will be thrown at you from there. Your best and #1 defense you'll need to claim is that you are not suicidal.... if you are, stop reading this, and go seek help.
Hopefully you are not failing at suicide attempts and are truly just trying to relieve some pain and cope with the stress of life.
If you are using self injury like a drug, check this site out:
http://www.rational.org/html_bullets/Bullet1.html
I did and replaced the word drink/drug with self injury - it gave me a whole new perspective and changed my life forever.
You need to start investing in yourself and learn some new ways of coping. Self injury is an effective short-term coping method, but it is NEGATIVE and leads to more problems in the end, sometimes, even death.
Remember that in life, we can not be "forced" to do anything. You're over 18 - it's not for your parents to know. When did you start doing this? Why are you doing it now? The list of questions goes on and on..........

The problem as you describe it is you are causing bodily harm to yourself, is this not true? It's not bad if your new roommate finds out, but how long do you really think that you can hide it from everyone else at your college.
You could be forced to see a psychiatrist by the school and maybe your parents if they have a real reason to deem that one is necessary.
It might not have to be one at your college, it could be one off campus. But the worst thing of all is that your parents would have to be notified. If they are the ones that are paying for your schooling in the first place, then they would definitely need the notification. Schools are kind of goofy like that, they seem to want more students to fail than they want to win and graduate.
Hope this helps some. Good Luck at school!!

OMG my heart goes out to you,I have such a desire to try and help in any way I can,,You are worth so much more than this, the depression will go away in time,I know that just seems like words, but it is the truth.I understand a little about self mutilation.I know that it brings you really close to yourself.while most people cant even phathom the concept of being close to themselves, you have mastered it....this means that you are really sensitive, very artistic and extremley beautiful,,to the point that you are tired of people noticing your beauty and want them to se only you...you must try to accept your own skin...you are beautiful and your just going to have to live with it......I want to talk to you and try to offer you counsel, but Im afraid Im not really qualified in this feild,,,please seek someone who is.......alos I know this sounds like a very hard thing to do,but you should consider telling your parents about your thoughts and actions,,they are the people who are in the best position to help you and I think you will be surprised at how understanding they can be........

Most colleges have health/counseling centers. Self-injury (unfortunately)is common among college age kids so they are used to helping with this. It will not go on your record as mental health records are completely confidential. They will not tell your parents and in fact, can get in trouble for doing so if you are over 18.
Please go to the counseling/health center asap. The faster you get help, the faster this problem will be behind you.

As you are over 18yrs you have the right to your own confidentiality. Really I wouldn't wait to be 'found out', you are aware you have a problem, why not go and get some help. Go outside of the college counsellors or psychiatrist if that is what you feel more comfortable with.

You'll have some counseling issues to deal with if your Resident Assistant finds out. You wont be forced to do anything, it wont go on your record, and your parents will only be notified if you admit that you injure yourself with suicidal intentions.

I don't know about college, but in high school they definitely send you to the school nurse / psychiatrist. I had scratched my arm (totally on accident while painting a fence) and another kid in my class saw it and turned me in for self-mutilation. It took me about a week to convince teachers and counselors that I didn't do it. But why are you hurting yourself? Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to seek professional help; it would be better to come forward now then to get caught later.

You probably ought to tell your parents anyway, and seek counseling before it reaches that point.
If you want to help yourself, that's what you need to do...if you already self-harm, you certainly have other underlying issues that need to be addressed. It won't just go away, and someone will inevitably find out some day, whether you intend it or not. (Let's just say, I can relate)
