It just slips out all the time. Whenever I ask God to forgive me and to help to not do it again, it just happens again. It's at the point where I don't want to ask for forgiveness anymore because saying a prayer that's insincere or whatever is also taking the Lord's name in vain. I've struggled with this for years now. Today I got really mad and yelled and cussed at God. I just don't know what to do. I read an article put out by one of my Churches saying that even the Angels don't take the Lord's name in vain and how dare we do what the angels dare not do?

Try a little cognitive behavior therapy. Think of something you would prefer to say instead (gosh-darn-golly-gee? sugar? rats? sweet merciful Zarquon? pick something you like). Then put a rubber band around your wrist.

When what you don't want to say slips out of your mouth give yourself a good snap with the rubber band and say the alternate phrase. This will help you become more conscious about what comes out of your mouth. When you say the alternative phrase conjure up some pleasant mental imagery. When you catch yourself before the bad words come out then use your alternate phrase and conjure up the same soothing mental picture (but you don't have to snap yourself). It will take a little while but you can make the transition from what you don't want to say to what you do want to say if you keep at it consistently for a few weeks.

There's no harm in praying for assistance with your problem. Even if you have to keep praying it over and over it's not a sin as long as you mean it.

Hope this helps

Yes, i have trouble with the same thing and you just have to really watch your temper as this is usually when it happens. We, at least I was around it all my young life with my parents, relatives and friends and you just get used to hearing it and be it for acceptance or to fit in we start doing it. Societal Norms however have been made so as not to accept this behavior and it is, one way of using the lords name in vain, ie the lord says: "rather curse not at all". However the taking or using of the lords name in vain as it is written is a reference to "twisting the word of God for money" ie through cross referencing of many verses you will find that the "name of the lord" refers to "the word of God". And I'm pretty sure you don't do that. And you have to take into account where it is written of Michael the archangel when he was contending with the devil over the body of Moses and he said: Durst (or do) not bring one railing accusation against him (Moses) but said: "the Lord rebuke thee". Upon further examination of the phrase as it is defined nowadays it is said the other way or" G_ _ D_ _ _ you". As you see it can be said either way and personally if you read the bible at all there are quite a few things that God (to put it nicely) rebukes.

Now about the yelling and cussing at God, you have to understand that if it is bad thing happening then more than likely he didn't have much to do with it. The reason it happens for one, has to do with Lucifer and two, because we as a society have fallen away from the beliefs and practices of our ancestors the House of Israel. And when the Lord has called on us to return we choose not to listen and to continue in the traditions we have been taught since childhood. The Lord actually states: "When I called they would not listen, therefore when they call, I likewise will not listen". Elsewhere he states: "These people draw near to me with their mouths, but their hearts and minds are far from me", in other words as we say nowdays: They are giving me lip service. And as far as the part about their hearts and minds, consider this the Lord says "study to show thyself approved unto God". and "through much study is wisdom attained".
Thats all I'll say for now, except just keep working on it. And eventually, as with any change, it takes time and willpower and you will overcome. My personel advice would be to keep asking for forgiveness and try not to feel like a hypocrit as you are admitting you have a problem and you are trying to change or repent if you will. Trust me, the Lord knows if you are sincere or not and this does make a difference.

What you need isn't preventive therapy but spiritual maturity. And that only comes with time (take it from someone who's not naturally patient) and staying rooted in the Word and in prayer. There's no quick fix. Just stay focused on your relationship with the Lord and spending time with Him through Bible study and prayer and He will change you on the inside, and as He does so, you will see His changes in your life on the outside. Is it easy? No. Is there any other way? Nope. But His faithfulness will keep you growing more and more like Him if you just keep your focus on Him. If I can help in any way, please feel free to drop me a line at chad@jesusfreak.com. I'll be praying for you.

I used to have the hardest time completing a sentence without at least one curse word in it. Now I don't have that problem. I prayed fervently for God to erase that language from my vocabulary and He has done it. Just keep praying and start thinking about how powerful He is and how omnipotent He is....words cannot express how great and wonderful He is...if you start to think of him in this way, soon you will come across His name and think of how powerful and excellent even His name is and you will remove His name from your vocabulary and start saying "Father", "Lord",.....Keep praying in earnest...it will stop.

I was able to quit using the fathers name in vein several years ago. I just substitute a different word. ****! It's more fun to say.

"God" and "Lord" are job titles, not names.

To stop that habit, substitute another term or phrase for "God." For example, I say "Jiminy Crickets!" or "for the love of Pete!" (I don't know who "Pete" is, it's just how I heard that phrase originally)

Train yourself to say "Gosh" or "Cheeze it" or "Cheese & rice". It'll take awhile but you can do it.
