No we cant defend against any sizable nuclear attack yet the missle defense system is still in its infancy and could only protect during a single missle or up to 10 missle attack. The USA probably wouldnt win but neither would the other country if its a large scale attack. On a small scall one like if north korea would happen to get one through even though we would be hit they have only maybe 6 nuke capable weapons we have 25,000. so you can do the math on that.

USA satellites and spy planes are monitoring the ground for any missile activity around the globe 24/7. Currently a nuke could be delivered from a sub, boat, plane, another country, our own backyard, or from space. But why would anybody try to send a nuke to the USA. They would be anniliated 7 minutes later, if they would do unlikely damage or not. There are plenty of missiles and nukes laying around since 1989 ( Ukraine), rotting away and nobody tried to use one. I feel very, very safe in regards to a nuke attack. It is a scare picture like the boogey man, used by the pentagon to get more grants, or Bush/Cheney to start preemptive wars.

Yes, the US currently has many anti-missle defense systems. The newest is an airborne anti-missle laser. The US is the only REAL superpower left in the world so it would do better (no real winner) than most countries.

Not against most types of advanced ballistic missiles or small devices smuggled into the country across our fenceless borders or thru our open ports. You should read a good civil defence manual on what to do and how best to increase your survival chances. Search under Civil defence or go to Alibris or Amazon and ask about books on nuclear attack/survival.

Were we prepared for what happen on 9/11? I think not. 9/11 would be a picnic compared to a nuke attack.

Why if you get the answer you want are you planning to start a war?
The answer to those questions would be a matter of the highest military security and not available to the entire world on Yahoo.
The intelligent question is would anyone win a Nuclear war? Isn't it time to start thinking of diplomatic solutions to disagreements war has traditionally not settled any issues.
