If you need to take a test, like the ones that life insurance co's give, to see if you are a smoker, they don't test for nicotine. There are, however, other markers that are detectable that last in the system for up to two weeks.

Nicotine is a dependence drug and its availability in the body especially the brain by occupation of specific receptor types means that there is sort of a 'memory' effect leading to tolerance and hence dependance even when the compound is cleared. So basically your brains wants it all the time.

The clearance of nicotine by the liver takes about 1-2 hrs.
