We all know that milk is our everyday resource for vitamin D and calcium to help strengthen our bones. Conversely, I remember one of my past teachers telling me that milk is not as practical as everyone thinks, but I can't really recall the reasons why.

What do you think? What are the cons and pros of drinking milk? Does it bother you in any way that we're consuming something that is PRODUCED by an organism used to nurture their young?

i don't know the details but in my sister's college health book, it says milk accually obsorbs calcium from your bones and that milk is just something the government advertises so that the dairy people won't run out of buisness(less unemployment). the gov accually pays the milk company to do advertisements. i don't know what to believe...

humans are the only mammals that drink other mammal's milk

I'm pretty sure the benefits of drinking milk i.e. calcium, vitamins nutrients etc outweigh any disadvantages... though I drink low fat becuase full fat is probably too high for adults.

As to the young issue, my father never drank milk on the basis that "cow's milk is meant for baby cows". Honestly, it doesn't bother me at all. Everything we eat has a reason for being in it's natural environment (grain is a plant seed, vegies are a plants roots leaves etc, meat is a whole other sentient organism). The food chain stipulates what each organism eats/drinks (for the most part) and I'm quite happy with following that. I guess soy etc is another option ... but I'm pretty sure that plant had another use for that soy bean.

Cow's milk, as I understand, has larger fat globules than goat's milk, and therefore the latter is more suitable for human consumption, humans being closer in bulk to goats than cows (although I've seen more than a few exceptions to that!).
It's true that some people allergic to cow's milk thrive on goats' milk, my younger son being one of those. It is also said that the minerals and vitamins in milk are not thoroughly absorbed into the body, and that there are better sources of these. All of this is disputed by the large and powerful dairy industries, so a thorough search on the 'net may be in ordewr to dig out the truth of the matter here.

Final note: - It has been claimed that cattle fart more methane than the average car, so this must also be taken into the debate (theoretically, of course).

Doesn't bother me. But then, I've been drinking milk for as long as I can remember. My doctor has been impressed with how strong my bones are.

A few years ago, someone made the statement "everybody knows that milk causes cancer, yet they still allow it in our school system." He was adamant that his new born twins would never go near the stuff........... I don't know what he heard, but I haven't heard whatever it is.

Yes , it does bother me. I was vegan for 5 years. I do now consume dairy products, started again when pregnant. I can not bring myself to actually use regular cow milk for home use like cooking and eating with cereal though. If I don't see the food being made with it I can eat it.
Reasons for it not being good, hormones, high fat (some), no iron, for baby cows. Look at some vegan sites.

calcium does provide for strong bones as well as strong teeth some folks find they are lactose intollerant so most all dairy products cause them problems some can only drink the 1% or 2% milk instead of the whole milk my grandparents only had available buttermilk and milk butter from their cows i think the products now days are full of stuff now so USDA approved only

If milk was never intended for human consumption, it wouldn't have been sanctioned by God would it? Besides, it's not as if the calves will be left to die by the farmers. I am pretty sure that these calves will be given an alternative form of nourishment.
