I'm a dentist.

TMJ stands for "temporomandibular joint". It's the joint (you have two of them) between your jaw bone and your skull.

TMD is what you are referring to. It is impossible for me to tell you whether or not your problem will go away or can be treated without knowing more about its history. Specifically, what are your symptoms, how long have they been going on, what makes them better and worse, etc.. And, of course, I'd need to examine you myself.

I can offer you a little encouragement, however. Most people (perhaps 75%, if memory serves) will at some point in their lives develop TMD symptoms, and the vast majority of these problems subside on their own without any treatment whatsoever.

Regardless, go see your dentist and have it evaluated. There are a few things that can be done to make you more comfortable.

Everyone has TMJ. TMJ disorder is another thing. And no, it doesnt go away, not without the help of a professional. Have your dentist check how sirious is your problem and have him recomend a good specialist. Sometimes it just takes a simple technique called selective grinding. Hat this does is change the way you bite and from that your muscles make the adjustment. Other times it requires some sort of mouth guard. I can tell you this for sure, the worse it gets, the more impossible is to get it fixed, and the best chance of getting it fixed is an early discovery. So go see your dentist!

Good luck!

DENTISTS MOLD A MOUTH PIECE FOR YOU THAT WILL HELP THE JAW - BONE ALIGNMENT TO WEAR IN BED. I HAVE HAD EPISODES AFTER ORTHO WORK WHEN IT WAS AWFUL. I NEVER DID GO BACK FOR THE MOUTH PIECE. IT IS BETTER. ONLY AFTER PROLONGED DENTAL WORK DOES IT STILL EFFECT ME NOW. DO NOT WORRY! HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON!
