This is always been a dilemma to the Italian family from New York and New Jersey. Ragu' is a gravy or a sauce now we have the cheesecake dilemma, is a pie or cake. I think the answer could be both. Is a pie because has a crust, and the shape, but could be a cake because has eggs, flour is not necessary. To make easy for the Italian family of New York, and New Jersey and to solve both dilemmas. The true answer for both dilemmas is that Ragu' is a sauce not a gravy, and cheesecake is a cake because originally was baked not in a round pan.

Hmmm interesting question...never thought about it before lol. I'd say since the name of the thing is CheeseCAKE, I'll trust in that, and deem it a cake. But I do love Ricotta PIE, which, by my rules would have to be a pie lolol. Come to think of it, when cooking one it is prepared more like a pie than a cake, but a cheesecake is prepared more like a cake. Yup I'm sticking with cake :)

What I do know is it's very fattening, not especially healthy, but sure is yummy!!!

Cheesecake is the name of a pie, cakes have no crust , cakes have icing.

i've heard it could be both.

my style of differentiating between pie and cake for cheesecakes is if 1. it is baked, it is a cake, and 2. if it is refrigerated, it is a pie.

but it's really up to you... i've had a recipe that called it a cake and another that called it a pie!!! :)

Cheesecake is technically a PIE. It has a crust, and a filling. Cakes are made from batter, with no crust.

Technically, it's actually a cake, but I think it should be a pie.

when made properly (New York style, baked in a springform pan) it's a cake.

The instant, crumb-crust type is a pie....but then it's not real cheesecake. Good, though

It's one of those odd things in the middle. Although it's more of a pie, since it is a shell with a filling.

Technically, it's more like a pie since it has the crumb crust and the yummy filling. But I consider it a dessert in its own right.
