My kid isn't old enough to be a year yet, but when he is I would like to have a cake for him and put the whole thing on the web cam for my family to see. I think it would be really fun.

The first birthday party is more for the parents & family than for the child. At 1 year they are not really old enough to begin to understand party, presents, themes, etc. Just take lots of pictures & video, definitely give him his own small cake that he can dig into & make a total mess of, schedule it around his naptime so he's well rested, avoid clowns if he's afraid of masks & makeup (many babies & toddlers are), relax & have fun. Think of it as a slightly bigger playdate than usual, but don't make it too big for what your child enjoys (and only you can answer that) - maybe 2 -3 friends that he knows & plays with. Don't try to pan games/activities for this age - they aren't ready for it, but have something if there are some older kids/cousins who need something to do.

He/She will never remember it. So it doesn't really matter to him/her what I did was just invite the family over for a nice dinner. Make sure you dress the kid in something you might be willing to throw out. Spread out plastic all around the kid. Make him/her a big bowl of spaghetti O's ( no spoon) and let the kid go for it. Then when the kid is done. Bring out the cake....It is a good idea to have a small cake for the kid....Then again let the kid have it. You will enjoy the tape for years to come and ....Hisher first real boyfriend/girlfriend will enjoy watching it too.

For his first we did a spiderman theme (my husband's idea) had over family and friends. had cake and ice cream, played games, colored and opened presents. For his second we had a curious george theme and pretty much the same thing. when he turns three in may it will probably be less of a party, but we will still do ice cream and cake and presents.
You could invite any friends with kids over for it, have a theme going.. from streamers to wrapping paper, tape the whole thing ! and most of all LET HIM EAT CAKE! lol fun to watch it get all over the kid and it is fun and yummy for them!

Get two birthday cakes, one for everyone at the birthday party to eat and one for the baby to dig into with his hands. He'll get it all over himself and have a great time doing it, he might even get a little in his mouth. Be sure to make a tape of this or at least take lots of pictures. You will treasure them for years to come.

On my child's 1st birthday, I had a small cake for him and then a cake made for everyone else that attended. And as he opened presents, I passed out a sheet of paper to everyone that attended to write a sentiment for him. So 18 years from now he can open up a gift box and read all of these for his birthday.

Please do video tape him.
He will watch this for many years and laugh.
Dont worry about who attends....get him a cupcake and sing happy birthday to him /her a few times till she starts to laugh.
Take lots of pictures especially when she is trying to feed herself the birthday cake.
Take a few a pictures before and after (the feeding) and send them to both sets of parents.
Enjoy the peace....this will be the last one the next ones will be soo hectic
congrats on your little persons birthday
what a milestone

Give your son a cake and presents. Tape him playing, crawling/walking, clapping, and smiling. All the milestones you looked forward to seeing in your baby. And by all means No clowns!
