Do you get as annoyed by the Yahoo Answers grammar queens as I do? Don't you agree that it's silly, rude and frankly pretty damned petty, to correct somebody's spelling or grammar in an answer to their question? After all, this is NOT school and we're not getting graded!!!

Yep. Even though it's great to sound smart, if all you have to comment on is how a person spells, then in reality you must not have the smarts enough to answer the question asked.

I rarely correct people's grammar/spelling/etc. on here. Heck, sometimes I don't even correct my own. I have done it before though. A question like "Y is balck pepol all so stupid! they stele 2?" just begs to be corrected. How can anyone resist pointing out the irony of the questioner's stupidity?

As long as a question is readable, I don't really care. Little spelling/grammar issues are nothing. I do admit it's hard to read through questions that are written like poorly spelt/constructed text messages. It's not that I feel I'm "better" than someone who doesn't make an effort to be comprehensible, it's that I wonder who taught them it was okay to be so rude to others. The attitude of "I can spell however I want, screw them" is one I just don't get. If you're asking/answering questions on a public forum, make an effort to be understood. It's just polite.

Whether or not your writing is "graded," others are reading it. This means that they should be able to read it! And since usually those readers are trying to do you a favor by answering your question, proper grammar and punctuation is a nice way to show gratitude and respect. Proper grammar and spelling allows people to read something once and understand it, rather than sit there puzzling out what it means.

Also, many people appreciate being corrected in a place or way that is reasonably private. This place is nearly anonymous for most people, so it qualifies. It seems to me that it's a lot better to learn about grammar or spelling mistakes here than, say, a college or job application. People who correct you are most likely trying to help you avoid future problems or embarrassment. It's not likely they're trying to show you up or prove they're smarter! Recognizing a misspelled a word or incorrect punctuation isn't going to prove someone belongs in MENSA.

Look at it this way: when someone asks for directions, do you think the person who answers them is "smarter" because s/he happens to know the way? S/he has more information in that one area. That's all that shows. Even if you know the way to the museum, if someone overhears your plan to go there and points out that another route is much faster and easier, wouldn't you appreciate their input, and possibly take their advice? Are *they* smarter because they knew the more efficient way?

Look at proper grammar, spelling and punctuation as the more efficient way to making yourself understood, and the "queens" as people who are just pointing out how handy that route is.

Me personally, I don't care, so long as they actually answer the question.

Some people need to be bothered by grammar queens, anyway! I can't understand many questions here because the spelling and grammar is horrible. 8-|

I could desire to confess, i'm somewhat militant while it includes acceptable grammar. in basic terms a puppy peeve of mine. i do no longer turn grammar police on typos or harder grammar regulations. I do think of all people could desire to a minimum of have the grammatical skill of a 6th grade point. which incorporates understanding the perfect sort of "their, they are, there", "you're and your" and "to, 2, too."

I'm one of them. I think it's silly that 1. you don't know the proper way to say something 2. you're too lazy to take the time to look it up and 3. You just don't care if your bad spelling and grammar makes you come off as someone less intelligent than you probably. Grammar and spelling make you look SMART.

It doesn't matter if you're not in school, it's a projection of yourself. It makes you look uneducated, juvenile and you lose all credibility with whatever question or statement you're making. Why not always do your best and project a good image. It's not that hard, they even have a spell check! Some people spell and use grammar so badly that you can't even understand the question.

Depends. Not if there is really some serious content to the question usually.

Otherwise, have at it.

Along the same lines, I am annoyed by people who try to make up all the rules for Q&A. Are you the Q&A Rule Queen?? Or Ettiquette Queen??

I think if you can keep your answer or question readable, then there shouldn't be a problem. However, many people are too lazy or ignorant to spell out a small word (ur for you're/your, r for are, etc.). That can be annoying as well.

I can't understand half of the questions because of bad grammar! People with poor English skills are going to be held back in life.

It doesn't matter if this isn't school and we're not being graded. When people can't be bothered to spell correctly, capitalize or make coherent sentences, it embarrasses me to no end and frustrates me that I can't understand the questions or answers.

And frankly, those people come across as imbeciles.

Thankfully, your spelling and grammar are excellent. (Go easy on the exclamation points, though.)
