If you have a shifter that is indexed then you may need your cable tension adjusted, most likely it's a loose cable. If when the shifter is on 7 and chain is on the 7 cog and you shift to 6 and there is no reaction then tighten up the cable from the adjuster on derailleur. Each click of the shifter should represent a shift, if it takes more then one click to change gear then cable is loose, if it jumps more then one gear then your cable is too tight. good luck

Everything on your bike is prone to wear and tear. The cables, which control your gears, will stretch. You chain will stretch and your cogs will become worn. This leads to skips, jumps and false gears.

Time to get your bike serviced. Doesn't need to be major, just so long as your gears get re-indexed. (Cost about £15)

Luck

I some time,s have that problem with my Giant it is mostly dirt or corrosion in my case. Get some good penetrating oil and lightly spray the pivot point,s of the derailleur,s and then work them . If that is not the answer then you may need to adjust or replace cables or derailleur,s. In that case i would recommend a bike shop unless you have the tools and knowledge to do it your self.

This could have been caused by a number of reasons. I think it needs adjusting, whether by adjusting the rear derailler, or tensioning the cable (when there is cable stretch lots of things start to happen, such as "ghost shifting".) Perhaps take it in to the bike shop.

go to a reputable bike shop and have it fix by a bike mechanic!
