I think that Labs are the kind of dog that is always a puppy for their whole life. I have 3 of them in different stages of life from 1 year old to 11 years old. As to the jumping up on people there are 2 things that you can do. 1. Don't let your dog jump on you or encourage it to greet you(some people tap their chest to encourage their dog to jump up to greet them). Since dogs normally greet each other by thumping chests this only sets your dog up to do this to every one that they meet. 2. When your dog goes to jump up raise your knee quickly and turn away from your dog and say in a firm voice "NO". Then get him in a sitting position pet him and tell him he is a good dog. It will take some time but persistence will pay off. Treats help in this process along with praise.

Well, I work at a vet clinic, and we see more labs than any other dog. Some of them are calm by 2 years old, but most of them stay hyper forever. We had a 9 year old lab come in last week, someone asked me how old he was and I guessed that he was 2 because he acted like such a puppy, I was shocked to find out he was 9 years old!! I don't think there is a way to tell when he will calm down, so the best thing to do is get him lots of exercise. Take him to a park and throw the ball or frisbee until he is so tired he will come home and calm down. Or take him on Very Long walks 2-3 times a day so he will be more calm when he is in the house. Good Luck with your dog!!

My lab is only about 7 or 8 months old, and he does have a somewhat hyper nature, especially on days when the walk hasn't been long enough. On days when he does get the exercise he needs though, he calms right down when I want him too. He is almost always calm in doors and crazy out in the backyard. Everything I read about labs is they have a lot of energy but if they came from a good breeder they shouldn't be hyperactive. Mine came from the animal shelter, but I think labs in general are highly energetic

Yes they are definately hyper when they are younger. But do not worry w/ time your lab will calm down... it may feel like a while before you start seeing it but dont worry, with time you will. Labs are great dogs, yours will chill out w/ age and be a great companion.

younger labs can get hyper at times but once they get older they will mellow out. My lab mix is 2 years and he can still get a little hyper, and my other lab mix is 6 and he will play and play and play with the other dog then can be lazy.

yes labs are naturally hyper. he should get better at the age of 2. I have yorkies and a 1 year old that i can't wait for her to reach 2. my other 3 are older and I rember how hard it was. since labs are fairly tall dogs you should be able to reach his collar and if he goes to jump grab his collar and hold him down. best you can do for now besides say down.

i have a hound(mom), lab/rottie(dad)cross, she is about 12 y/o. i adopted her because i have many(too many to mention! :) ) years w/these types of dogs. they are generally all puppy like for about 5+ years, if you have a healthy animal. it's just the "nature of the beast". if this a problem, childern, confined household, etc... seek training classes. take more time to be with the animal, let it run more, that sort of thing. you must never forget, labs are sporting breeds. they make great pets, but are high energy!!! thats what makes thame great sport/family pets!
enjoy, it doesn't last past five years, soon you have a tired dog, old dog, wonder where the energy went!
love your pet for what it is, train it!
happy dog to you!

i had four labs that traveled with me in pairs of 2 when i truck drove..if you can imagine 2 labs in a big truck cab..wow.talk about wound but as time went on they settled down and become my best friends,i used the knee on mine when ever they jumped up to greet me i would lift my knee...easy!!and say down..then as they got down or if i could catch them before they jumped up i would come to there level.and greet them,.they will get it just keep after them and be consist ant don't change tactics or they may get confused and you will both be frustrated..remember there smarter than they look

Ya, labs naturally have a lot of energy when they're younger. They really need a good amount of excersize. I would recomend fetch and dog parks.............Also, when he jumps on people straight up yell at it..........most dogs are really eager to please and they feel bad when they think you're mad at them.
